Royal Event of the Day: Koningsdag 2018, and New Portraits

King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 51st birthday on Friday, heading to Groningen with the extended family for the annual Koningsdag (King's Day) festivities.

Queen Máxima decided to throw things back to 2004, when they visited the same town for Queen's Day (as it was at the time), by repeating her red beret and pairing it with a new Natan outfit.

2004
Her jean jacket from Groningen in 2004 also made a return this year, worn by Princess Alexia. The red beret doesn't seem nearly as kicky without it, I must say.

I'm not really sold on the hat-to-outfit pairing this year, I suppose. I liked it better without the coat, but then the dress revealed made me wish there was more of a pattern to it. I might be giving this year a meh.

Lucky us, we've got some new portraits to pep things up! A whole bunch of new official photos were released to celebrate Willem-Alexander's 5th anniversary on the throne. The formal shots feature Queen Máxima in her repeated Jan Taminiau gown and the Dutch Sapphire Tiara. [Portraits: RVD - Erwin Olaf]

Tiara Watch of the Day: The Dutch Diplomatic Corps Gala Dinner

It's about time we saw some Máxima tiara action around here.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, with Princess Beatrix, Princess Margriet, and Pieter van Vollenhoven, hosted their annual gala dinner for the Diplomatic Corps yesterday.
Embed from Getty Images
I've never been wild about the combination of textures and colors and shine on this old Natan outfit, so that's all the more reason to focus on the gems: the Dutch Aquamarine Tiara plus earrings and an aquamarine pendant on a diamond rivière necklace. Starting small to build up to larger things later on, like the state visit to Luxembourg next month, I hope.

Embed from Getty Images
Princess Margriet also had an interesting combination going on with her dress, business at the top and party at the bottom. More classic is her use of the Pearl Button Tiara - her wedding tiara! - with a pearl necklace and diamond and pearl earrings.

Embed from Getty Images
Princess Beatrix stuck to her trademark tiara, Queen Emma's Diamond Tiara. Forever a great match for her, since the shape works just right with her trademark 'do.

They were entertaining in the evening and entertaining during the day, yesterday; the King and Queen received the President and First Lady of Mexico for an official visit and hosted a luncheon.
Presidencia de la República
Just in case the tiaras weren't enough, Máxima offers you something else: the return of your #1 favorite day dress of 2017! Still glorious, do you think?

Bonus Tiara Watch: The CHOGM Dinner, Plus Meghan's Latest

Let's dig into the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) festivities for the second time today, because a couple highly anticipated events occurred this evening.

The first, of course, is the tiara-filled dinner hosted by the Queen at Buckingham Palace!
Royal Family
The monarch got things started in a very sparkly way by piling on the diamonds and the rubies, including surprising us by wearing the Ruby and Diamond Floral Bandeau Necklace last seen on the Duchess of Cambridge and not seen on the Queen herself since the 1980s. Her tiara is the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara (her fave). You can, as always, see a complete rundown of her jewel selections right here at the Jewel Vault.

All available hands were on deck for the dinner, except Kate (for obvious reasons) and Meghan (who did attend a different reception with Harry earlier in the evening, keep scrolling for that). Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were present...
Embed from Getty Images
...and we'll cut to the chase, there were no first tiara appearances for the sisters tonight. Although unmarried princesses have certainly worn tiaras in the past (Anne and Margaret most recently in the British royal family; plenty more outside of that), I'm not surprised that they didn't go digging through the vaults for this black tie occasion. My condolences to those of you nursing deep disappointment!

Plenty of other tiaras on display to soothe that disappointment, though. CHOGM provided a livestream which you can replay here; I have some shots below (just glimpses, mostly, so apologies for quality. We're lucky we got a livestream at all!).
CHOGM screencap
Typical selections for the Duchess of Cornwall and the Princess Royal. We just saw this whole look on Anne during last year's Spanish state visit, with the Festoon Tiara, and her diamond demi-parure. It's the Greville Tiara and the Pear Drop Diamond Demi-Parure for Camilla.

CHOGM screencap
The Wessex Aquamarine Necklace Tiara was looking splendid on the Countess of Wessex, who paired it with a colorful gemstone necklace that's part of a set of unknown origin that she's had for a few years. She appears to be wearing the dress she wore to the Swedish royal wedding in 2015.

CHOGM screencap
Princess Alexandra of Kent chipped in with the pearl setting of her Ogilvy Tiara, nicely accessorized with an intricate pearl and diamond choker.

CHOGM screencap
I was thrilled to see the Iveagh Tiara, such an interesting and intricate piece, make an appearance on the Duchess of Gloucester. She's also doing something interesting with a pair of jeweled clip brooches on her dress, too, so Birgitte's keeping up the good work.

CHOGM screencap
Wrapping things up on the tiara front, Princess Michael of Kent brought the Kent City of London Fringe Tiara out to play, another piece we haven't seen in a while.

While we're on the CHOGM evening topic, just before the big Buckingham Palace dinner, Harry and Meghan attended a Women's Empowerment reception. Meghan wore a power dress, basically:
Embed from Getty Images
That's a great LBD. It's by Black Halo. Not too dressy, not too casual, all purpose as a great LBD should be. And that's as formal as she got today; Harry made a quick change for the Queen's dinner and Meghan will wait for the many such dinners she has in her future.

Phew! These kids are going all out for CHOGM. Gotta soak it up while we can.

Breaking Tiara News of the Day: Queen Letizia Wears the Cartier Diamond and Pearl Tiara

It's always headline news around here when Queen Letizia decides to dig something new out of the vaults.

The King and Queen of Spain hosted a state dinner for the President of Portugal during his state visit to Spain today.
House of HM the King
This is her first time wearing the Cartier Diamond and Pearl Tiara, which belonged to Queen Victoria Eugenia and went to Infanta Maria Cristina before making a return to the main line and being worn by Queen Sofia and (on one occasion) Infanta Cristina. (Check out the tiara's full story here.) This is my favorite of the larger Spanish tiaras and it looks perfect on Letizia, tipped back just a bit.

Embed from Getty Images
She paired it with the diamond earrings from the joyas de pasar and, of course, the sash and star of Portugal's Order of Christ.

House of HM the King
Just as she continues to experiment with jewels, Letizia continues to experiment with new designers, wearing a dress here by Ana Locking. This dress is a full-on Monet: a gorgeous star-filled evening sky from afar but a hail storm so harsh it'll rip your sleeves when viewed close up. But it definitely calls for a pearl tiara and this one's a winner, so I can only be all on board.

Royal Flashback of the Day: Victoria Visits an Old Favorite

Crown Princess Victoria visited the "Secrets of Couture" exhibition at Sven-Harry’s Art Museum this week. I mentioned this exhibition a few weeks ago; Victoria loaned dresses for the display, as did Queen Margrethe, Queen Silvia, Princess Madeleine, and Princess Sofia.

kungahuset.se
Victoria's visit will have brought her face to face with one of her most memorable looks of the past few years - no, let's make that one of her most memorable looks of all time. I am speaking, of course, of the dress several of you have dubbed Big Red.

Embed from Getty Images
Designed by Pär Engsheden (he's the guy viewing the exhibition with her above), this dress was worn for the Nobel Prize Awards ceremony in 2014. Tomato red with a skirt that can only exist in a world filled with grand staircases, this might just be the ball gown-iest ball gown we've seen around here. How could I not love it completely?

SVT screencap
There wasn't anything quiet about her jewels that night, either; the Baden Fringe Tiara can't help but sparkle like Christmas lights, and ditto that for the Bernadotte diamond cross necklace. The necklace was her big debut from the family jewel vault that night.

GALA screencap
I wonder if she saw it and thought about wearing it again some day. I wonder what she would even wear it again for; this dress needs an entire stage to itself. It might be a one-and-done, and it might be worth it even for just that one night.

Royal Fashion Awards: New Year Receptions, 2018

Greetings and Happy New Year! We always get to start off the year with tiaras around here, courtesy of the sparkling New Year receptions held in Japan and Denmark, and there’s no better way to celebrate. And sometimes, we even get a few early contenders for the best outfits of the new year…

Best in Brand New
Crown Princess Mary
Kongehuset
Red gowns ruled the royal scene in 2017, and if Crown Princess Mary has any say in it, that trend will be going strong right into 2018. In a classic shape pepped up with a little neckline interest – and the perfect sleeve and neckline configuration to wear the golden collar of the Order of the Elephant, so clearly a well-planned design – this red gown is a serious winner. The gown the custom work of Soeren Le Schmidt (as found by Heaven), continuing Mary’s exploration of the best that Danish design has to offer.

DR
Mary always wears her Danish Ruby Parure here, since it’s often the most formal event of the year, which makes the red gown an even better choice. This year her selections from the flexible ruby set include the tiara, the full version of the earrings (oh, do I love any opportunity to see those earrings in their full glory), the hairpins, the bracelet, and the ring. It seems like she might have done some more tinkering with the Ruby Parure Tiara, by the way; the middle seems a little less flat this time around. I wonder if one of the three hairpins has been added back in.

Most Coordinated in Repeats
Queen Margrethe and Princess Marie
Kongehuset
All of the Danish royal ladies were very gown-to-accessory coordinated this year. Queen Margrethe has worn this green lace dress for this occasion in the past (with these jewels) (and with her trusty Yeti wrap, obvs) and it’s a natural match for the Danish Emerald Parure. The emeralds are part of the Crown Jewels.

Kongehuset/DR
Princess Marie wore this gold and white Rikke Gudnitz dress to the Belgian state banquet last year. It shines even more here as it picks up the gold in her Order of the Elephant chain splendidly. She wore her Diamond Floral Tiara, as she usually does.

Best in Bulk Diamonds and Pearls
The Japanese Imperial Family
ANN
You can always count on the Japanese ladies to start your year with all the diamonds and pearls your heart desires. Empress Michiko, who no longer wears tiaras, led the way draped in her favorite diaphanous cape sleeves and multiple strands of pearls.

JNN
Because she'll be marrying in 2018, this was Princess Mako's last appearance at this gala, and the countdown of her last appearances in her tiara and parure continues. Her mother, Princess Kiko, was also in her own tiara and parure.

ANN
In addition to the multiple ladies that appeared in front of the cameras, Crown Princess Masako was seen arriving in the Japanese Pearl Sunburst Tiara. See her, and more pics, in this gallery.

Year in Review: Queen Letizia, 2017's Sartorial MVP

When I sat down to come up with my selections for this year's best outfits, the list of Queen Letizia's contenders just kept growing...and growing...and growing. She's not without her experimentation (who can forget that hiccuping ponytail?), which she balances with a steady diet of stunners. There's no competition here for me, she is our sartorial MVP right now. All hail 2017's top bringer of the jumpy claps!

State Banquet, State Visit to the United Kingdom
House of HM the King
I'm still dead from this Felipe Varela gown, and really this entire visit, which was one of my favorite things in 2017. There's no immediate hope for revival.
The jewels! The sparkle! The skirt! The RED!

King Willem-Alexander's 50th Birthday Party

Speaking of the RED, this Stella McCartney dress is flat out fabulous. And she brought her new best friends, the twin bracelets of the joyas de pasar, along for the party! Taking every opportunity to use these gems is my new favorite thing about her style.

State Banquet, State Visit from Argentina
House of HM the King
Her first joyas de pasar appearance still resonates for me. That simple black velvet column of a dress loaded down with diamonds...so chic.

Year in Review: Queen Mathilde and Crown Princess Mette-Marit's Bests of 2017

The pink ladies welcome you to the next installment of 2017's bests:

Queen Mathilde at the Indian State Banquet
Belgian Monarchy
Although Philippe and Mathilde's state visit to India didn't include any tiaras in the luggage, the day was saved with her rich gown selection. Hot pink color, rich embellishment, a flattering silhouette, oh yes.

Runner up:

Crown Princess Mette-Marit at the Annual Parliament Dinner
A post shared by Koma by Marte (@komabymarte) on
I'm not going to lie to you, I had a real tough time coming up with a best list for our friend Mette-Marit. I settled on this pale pink Koma by Marte dress not just for the dress (although it's lovely and pastels work well with her coloring) but because she chose to pair the Amethyst Necklace Tiara and parure with it.
VG screencap
Her default seems to be the Diamond Daisy Tiara and that would have been a natural choice with the pink. The unexpected, that's what I love. (And the purple.)

Tiara Watch of the Day: A Second Night of Nobel Sparkle

They’ve gone and done it again, those Swedish royal ladies. For the second night in a row, I am charmed by one and all. And they’re going for the title of Year’s Most Color Coordinated Family while they’re at it.

The royal family with laureate Kazuo Ishiguro and wife Lorna MacDougall.
Kungahuset.se
A pastel spring palette for all, anchored by the deep blue of Queen Silvia's Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure. The whole thing starts with Crown Princess Victoria's floral dress by Camilla Thulin. Man, I love a floral ball gown.

Kungahuset.se
And that is a BALL GOWN, make no mistake! Grand with a bit of whimsy. With a nature-themed tiara in Princess Lilian’s Laurel Wreath, she’s perfectly coordinated.

Princess Sofia’s throwing in the greens with a caped (!) dress and the return of the emeralds on her wedding tiara. The elastic (or whatever) at the waist seems a little flimsy for the rest of the drama, though I'm prepared to overlook it since we have a case of Tiara Hair Worn Down done right.

Kungahuset.se
It's good, right? As is Princess Madeleine (another member of the list of royals that can handle a tiara worn with hair down, incidentally). Madeleine’s appearance at Carl Philip and Sofia’s wedding in this Elie Saab gown is one of my all-time favorite maternity gala appearances; it’s just as grand the second time, paired again with the Modern Fringe Tiara.

Shall we catch up with the Norway Nobel crew, while we're at it? For their second night, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. You'll never guess what she wore...

It's more Erdem x H&M! We knew it was going to be popular, we just didn't know how popular. We should have made Bingo cards with these pieces, guys. Missed opportunity.

Royal Fashion Awards: The Nobel Prizes, 2017

For the first time in quite some time, I really like all the ensembles our Scandinavian royal friends wore for the Nobel Prize ceremonies – in both Norway, where the Peace Prize is awarded, and in Sweden, where the rest are awarded. This is particularly great in the case of the Swedish royal ladies, because we can focus on the tiaras. And they gave us a lot of tiara fun to talk about… (Revisit our open post for links to watch the ceremonies.)

Biggest Tiara Surprise
Crown Princess Victoria
SVT
I always seem to predict a nice jewel tone for Victoria, so this light blue was a big surprise. An even bigger surprise: Victoria wore the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara for the first time! She made it her own by adding a diamond rivière to the base. (She’s done this sort of temporary addition in the past to the Button Tiaras.)
Embed from Getty Images
Queen Silvia’s diamond floral earrings were a good balance for the large collar on this Jennifer Blom dress. You could take that down a notch and be none the worse, my single quibble with this otherwise delightful mass of light blue pleats.

Most Improved Tiara
Princess Sofia
Embed from Getty Images
Sofia just showed us that her Emerald and Diamond Tiara could lose its emeralds and open up its shape. She wasn’t done showing us her tiara’s many tricks, apparently, because now she’s replaced those emeralds with pearls. This tiara has never looked better.
Embed from Getty Images
The dress is from designer Ida Lanto, and that’s a princess dress if I ever saw one. Between that and the intense sparkle from her tiara, Sofia was operating at her highest princess level tonight.

Best Tiara Showcase
Princess Madeleine
SVT
Queen Josephine’s Amethyst Tiara isn’t an easy one to wear. Amethysts good enough to eat, but a wide circumference that’s tripped up many an experienced tiara model. Unless you’re Princess Madeleine. This is the second time she’s aced an amethyst outing.
SVT
She added other pieces from the Amethyst Parure to her look, which was just the first in a purple group tonight (much to my delight). Her bespoke dress from maternity label Séraphine is “pure mauve silk, featuring sumptuous hand-beaded overlay in precious gold silk.” Sumptuous indeed.

Achievements in Tiara Tackling
Princess Christina
SVT
She’s the best wearer of both the Dreaded Button Tiaras, she makes the tall Cut Steel Tiara look right at home, and now she’s tackled the Cut Steel Bandeau like a champ and came out on top. Princess Christina, folks. Give her a round of applause.

Most Predictable Tiara
Queen Silvia
SVT
As demonstrated by our recent flashback, Silvia’s been alternating the Leuchtenberg Sapphires and the Nine Prong Tiara for several years now. Last year we had the sapphires, so…Pronger, you’re up. She’s predictable but on trend with that purple dress, at least according to Pantone’s Color of the Year. It’s a repeat from the state visit to Germany by designer Georg et Arend (per The Royals and I).

Most Predictable in Daywear
Queen Sonja and Crown Princess Mette-Marit
Nobel Prize
Nobel Prize
Holding down the daywear fort, the Norwegian royals attended the Peace Prize ceremony earlier in the day and this is both exactly as you would expect (oh look, Mette-Marit’s worn a floral!) and even better than you’d expect (but get that floral in my closet right now, that looks rich). Well done, ladies.

Nobel fun continues with a dinner in Norway and, on Monday, another tiara dinner in Sweden. Stay tuned!

Who wins your prizes at this year’s festivities?

Tiara Thursday: Six Years of Nobel Sparkle

The Nobel Prize Award Ceremony is coming up this weekend, on December 10th. It's usually the last tiara event of the calendar year, tiding us over until the Danish and Japanese families ring in the next one with their own tiara events. I always like to review a few past Nobel looks in advance, so I'm re-upping a post from last year with the sparkle of 2016 added!

In 2017, the Swedish royal calendar says we can expect the King, Queen, Crown Princess, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Sofia, Princess Madeleine, and Christopher O'Neill to attend the award ceremony. Princess Madeleine will be skipping the banquet that follows because of back problems due to pregnancy (it's several hours long). The whole gang will then also attend the King's Dinner held at the Royal Palace the following day, which is another tiara event.

Get your wish lists ready! And to help you with that, here's what we've seen in the past few years...

Crown Princess Victoria: Cut Steel Tiara and a bespoke H&M gown
Princess Sofia: Cut Steel Bandeau, worn for the first time, and a House of Dagmar dress
