Royal Fashion Awards: Princess Adrienne’s Christening (Updated)

Princess Madeleine and Chris O’Neill celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary today by christening their third child, Princess Adrienne. Check out our open post here, with a link to watch the service.

Princess Adrienne wore the royal christening gown we’ve seen several times in the past century, especially in the past few years. The heirloom details, from the royal court:

The christening gown worn by Princess Adrienne during the ceremony was first worn by Prince Gustaf Adolf when he was christened in 1906. The gown was also worn by Gustaf Adolf's siblings (Sigvard, Queen Ingrid, Prince Bertil and Carl Johan) and by Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla's children, namely the Princesses Margaretha, Birgitta, Desirée and Christina, as well as The King.

The gown was also worn by Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, Princess Estelle, Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas, Prince Oscar, Prins Alexander and Prince Gabriel.

At the christening of Princess Margaretha in 1935, a cape and a cap made from cream-coloured silk satin were added. The names and dates of all the children christened have been embroidered in the lining of the cape.

The christening gown is made of cotton batiste and Valenciennes lace (bobbin lace) with a petticoat of satin woven silk. The gown has lace linings around the armholes. The gown is accompanied by a bodice of Valenciennes lace.

The christening gown also has a christening towel made of cotton batiste with Valenciennes lace.

Wee Adrienne grabbed right on to her baby sash of the Order of the Seraphim as soon as King Grandpa tucked it into place, because she knows what’s up.

I had no expectations of any major jewel debuts from a christening, which made this even better: Princess Madeleine wore pieces of the Cameo Parure for the first time today! She used the bracelet and the earrings. As a card-carrying member of the Cameo Tiara Fan Club, I now have my fingers crossed for more, because that what’s happens when you give me a little bit. Madeleine and the royal ladies wore their portrait brooches of the King, as usual.

The cameo pieces were perfect complements to the cream and gentle pinks of her floral dress by Giambattista Valli (h/t to Heaven). To my surprise, I even enjoyed the touch of flower power in her floral headband...or maybe that's just a little bit of carryover from my cameo delight.

Princess Leonore joined the floral dress brigade led by her mother. She chose to de-accessorize by taking off her shoes. The Swedes let the kids be kids at these events (bless ‘em for allowing the antics), so go ahead and get comfy, girl. Leonore was without a partner in crime today; Princess Estelle was sick at the last minute and could not attend.

My second favorite floral dress of the day belonged to Princess Sofia, interpreting the day’s pink color scheme in a bolder and sleeker fashion with this Ida Lanto dress. Little wrinkled after sitting through the service, but eh, that's life.

If I quibble (and I will), I would have loved to see some more colorful accessories beyond the purse and perhaps more of an actual hat. A big ask of any Swedish royal lady at these events, I know.

Crown Princess Victoria could have used a dose of Sofia’s color contrast; on the broadcast especially, the colors in her dress blended together to muddy effect. It’s the only dress here that’s gonna make me say it: too Little House on the Prairie. (Only one prairie reference in a post full of florals, such restraint! Way to go, me.)

I didn’t really understand her hat pairing, either; then again, I don’t understand her affection for these pile of embroidery hoop hats to start with. This is another version of the hat type she wore to Princess Leonore’s christening, at the time a nod to the headpiece Queen Silvia wore to Prince Carl Philip’s baptism (not the same hat, however).

As for Queen Silvia herself, well, she did her Silvia thing, and this faux wrap dress detail looks fantastic on her. Both grandmothers were operating at peak elegance. (Splendid brooch on Mrs. O'Neill, by the way.)

All four of King Carl Gustaf’s sisters were present at the christening; above from left to right behind the King and Queen, Princess Margaretha, Princess Birgitta, Princess Désirée, and Princess Christina. Only Princess Christina hatted up. (Lots of ladies didn’t and that’s par for the course at these events.) When Princess Christina hats up, she tends to hat up; this was sparkly and possibly capable of flight and I loved it. She had to make up for her sisters, after all. One hat to cover them all.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Spring with Beatrice and Eugenie

I've been meaning to do a York sister update, because they sported some fun stuff in May after the royal wedding. Such as:

Florals? For a flower show? Groundbreaking, I know. Also, in this case, super cute! I am always tempted to do away with blazers worn over the shoulders, though here I like how it ties into her shoes - flats, you'll note, both sporty and practical for hoofing it around the flower show grounds.

Both Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie attended events for Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award holders at Buckingham Palace with other members of the royal family.

And just like that, I'm back to wanting to get rid of the extra blazer stuff. This cape/coat/thing is not a great match to what Princess Beatrice has going on here. A shame, because Beatrice in an emerald dress is an otherwise splendid idea.

A veiled boater hat with a message of love: WHIMSY ALERT! But after two very subtle royal wedding hats from these two sisters, I'm finding this little bit of whimsy a welcome relief. Let's not lose all the millinery fun. The dark color keeps this Misa Harada message hat from veering into twee territory. I think it's another solid win for Eugenie. What message will she bring to Ascot, I wonder?

Royal State Visit of the Day: More from the Dutch in Luxembourg

And just a little tip for you from these ladies: Use those flowing garments as a showcase for your strongest necklace game. Queen Máxima wore the Ruby Peacock Necklace previously on this red gown; last night, she followed up on her Stuart Surprise with her Tutti Frutti-style necklace and bracelet. I wouldn't have thought that set would work so well with red, and yet it does. Just one reason that set belongs to her and not me, I guess. One of about 66,419 rea$on$.

Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie may not have sported a caftan - her flowy dress is another Elie Saab nabbed from her mother-in-law's wardrobe - but she too came to play in the necklace department. One of the diamond rivière necklaces from the Luxembourg collection! Making up for the giant diamonds missing from the Lux side of the state banquet, are we? (Luxarazzi posted a video of these arrivals, worth a view if you're interested in Stéphanie's updo. Some impressive hair architecture going on there.)

For day 2, the Grand Duchess looked super cute - a great jacket in bold jewel tone, neatly paired with cropped trousers and a statement necklace. That is all I have to say about the day outfits on day 2. Moving on...

Moving back, actually, to the arrivals and another can't-miss-it outfit from Queen Máx. If she'd leaned more into the green side of this and less into the yellow, she would have come pretty close to one of my all-time favorite QEII ensembles. But she didn't.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Camilla and Meghan in the Garden

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall hosted the Prince's 70th Birthday Patronage Celebration yesterday, a Buckingham Palace garden party for 6,500 people from 386 of his patronages and reps from 18 military affiliations. They were joined by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their first engagement as a married couple.

I'm not entirely convinced that Meghan's dress in photos lives up to its promise on the hanger, but I see where she's going and she's headed in a more chic direction than we usually see at a garden party. That's promising. (The dress is from Goat.)

Anyway, let's talk about that Philip Treacy hat and its perfectly matched updo. A brim! Huzzah. Sort of a beginner's entry into the serious world of hat shenanigans. Can you even really consider yourself a member of the British royal family before a hat has hula hooped its way around your head? I think not. She's officially in the fam now.

Camilla's an experienced hat hula hooper, and she has the impressive collection of Philip Treacy designs to prove it. She's also wearing her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Large Diamond Clasp and her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings.

Her Bruce Oldfield coat and dress looks like a rejected wedding option, right? "No, no, gotta leave the brights to the Queen and the white and light green to Doria. NEXT!" This minty coat is trying to trick us into believing there's a blazer involved too.

We can't forget the birthday boy, can we? (Even though his birthday's not until November.) He likes his gray morning dress, and it works really well on him. Impeccable as ever.

Royal Hat of the Day: The Countess of Wessex's Lattice (x3)

The Countess of Wessex joked at an event last week that she has her royal wedding outfit all ready to go, and I'll be shocked if it doesn't include a new hat from Jane Taylor, her favorite milliner. Sophie warmed up for a hat-tastic weekend by attending the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the season yesterday, selecting a Jane Taylor hat we've seen in two different versions with three different outfits. Comparison time!

Here's the hat's debut, with a black accent on top and a green Emilia Wickstead dress. I loved the lattice effect on this hat and so did many of you; the whole look garnered enough mentions to be in the running for your best day outfit of 2017.

Luckily for us, Sophie wasn't nearly done with the hat. Come October, the black twist on top was swapped for matching beige twists and coral feather accents to match a new outfit from Suzannah with a white top and coral skirt.

Now we have our third hat appearance, still in its coral version and worn with a red dress from Alaïa. (I assume she's informing the guests that she's wearing, like, a totally important designer).

Props to Sophie for repeating the same hat three times and managing to make each look completely different, right? Three times in less than a year and I'm not tired of this hat yet. That's a feat.

I'm still gonna ask the question, though: When did she wear it best? Give me Ascot any day, really. Can we get the black accent back? Coral might be my very least favorite color, so I'm biased.

Royal Shoes of the Day: Green for Victoria and Sofia

Outside of the super matchy-matchy world of Queen Máxima, green shoes aren't something we see much of around here. Except for this week, when they appeared not once but twice in Sweden!

Crown Princess Victoria started things off with bright green shoes and a bright green clutch paired with a new dress from the brand & Other Stories. Green's a natural match for a floral print and a great focal point in an outfit with such a busy print. Well played.

Princess Sofia attended the UNDP's Spring Gala last night.

Princess Sofia used a tiny peek of a pair of green shoes to liven up a black outfit; this skirt was part of an Ida Sjöstedt outfit that made me reference the Dowager Countess when she wore it the first time, but here it's delightful. (I originally thought the skirt was part of a gown, and I've never been so glad to learn it was separates.)

The choice of a green shoe isn't random; Sofia's letting her black outfit act as a canvas for all sorts of interesting accessories. Well played again, Sweden.

Royal Outfits of the Day: The Duchess of Cambridge's Last Two

The last two days of engagements for Kate were her last before maternity leave, Kensington Palace announced. Behold:

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge undertook engagements celebrating the Commonwealth on Thursday, ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London next month.

Royal Outfit of the Day: St. Patrick's Day with the Cambridges

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the Irish Guards on St. Patrick's Day, where the Duke, Colonel of the regiment, took the salute at the parade and the Duchess handed out the traditional shamrocks.

Another year, another root through the green section of the Royal Coat Museum! No need to search far back into the archives for this one; she just reused the Catherine Walker coat debuted a few weeks ago in Sweden with its faux fur collar and cuffs. Safe guess that was the plan behind commissioning another green coat in the first place, I'm thinking.

The Gina Foster hat is a repeat as well and a veteran of this ceremony. The color match between the hat and coat is good, something that can get dicey when combining repeats.

But enough about that, let's say hi to the real star of the day:

The Duchess of Cambridge decided to show off a little more from her jewel vault last night.

At the St. Andrews 600th Anniversary Dinner

The earrings she wore to the BAFTAs appear to be the bottom portion of the earrings she wore in 2014. She also wore the bracelet back in 2014. The provenance of this set is not officially known, but a gift from a Middle Eastern royal - based on the style and size of the jewels - is my strongest guess. A wedding present, maybe, since that would have been her biggest opportunity to pick up a Middle East gift thus far in her royal life.

If I just leave it at the emeralds and don't talk about the dress color, can we call that good?

Thing is, I found the notion that there should be any "controversy" should she choose to wear black in support of Time's Up in the first place to be a fairly infuriating thing. And I find myself unwilling to devote any more words to it than that. (But I'll end this back on a purely superficial note to say that, while the shape of this Jenny Packham dress is stunning, I'm not a fan of the dullness of this color with the vibrant emeralds. Funnily enough, they'd have looked amazing with black.)

You'll never guess what Meghan wore for her first trip to Scotland: a long coat and trousers, okay, yeah, and also TARTAN, because what else. A Burberry coat this time around with some Veronica Beard trousers that proved a little too long for a stroll outdoors.

When in doubt, match yourself to the regimental mascot. (This is Cruachan IV, the Shetland pony that spends more time hobnobbing with royalty than the royals themselves do, or so it seems. Cruachan met the Queen twice last year alone, once attempting to turn her bouquet of flowers into a tasty snack. Cheeky Cruachan tried to make a snack out of Harry this time, but who among us can blame him for that.)

She's still doing an excellent job of matching her outfit to Harry's, formality-wise, and I can't complain that I'd like to see her in something more formal (as I know many of you would) when the occasion doesn't call for it. It does, however, make me look forward to a more expanded program somewhere out there in the future - if for no other reason than putting an end to grand pronouncements on her style based on only a few appearances.

Royal Trip of the Day: The Cambridges in Sweden, Day 1

Right, well, let's get this out of the way first:

On the evening of the first full day of their official visit to Sweden, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a dinner at the British Ambassador's residence with Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

LOL. Okay, giggles out of the way...listen, I think there are people who could pull off this ruffled floral mustard Erdem gown; it's just that Kate, bless her, isn't one of that particular group of chosen ones. You need some attitude to pull off something that's ruffled and floral and mustard all at once. (This is where some of you will jump in and argue with me that it's not mustard, as though calling it some other color name could save the whole thing, and I shall giggle once more.)

I'm not that wild about Victoria's choice either, mostly because I keep thinking she left half her dressing gown on. But any port in a storm, I suppose.

Greetings and Happy New Year! We always get to start off the year with tiaras around here, courtesy of the sparkling New Year receptions held in Japan and Denmark, and there’s no better way to celebrate. And sometimes, we even get a few early contenders for the best outfits of the new year…

Red gowns ruled the royal scene in 2017, and if Crown Princess Mary has any say in it, that trend will be going strong right into 2018. In a classic shape pepped up with a little neckline interest – and the perfect sleeve and neckline configuration to wear the golden collar of the Order of the Elephant, so clearly a well-planned design – this red gown is a serious winner. The gown the custom work of Soeren Le Schmidt (as found by Heaven), continuing Mary’s exploration of the best that Danish design has to offer.

Mary always wears her Danish Ruby Parure here, since it’s often the most formal event of the year, which makes the red gown an even better choice. This year her selections from the flexible ruby set include the tiara, the full version of the earrings (oh, do I love any opportunity to see those earrings in their full glory), the hairpins, the bracelet, and the ring. It seems like she might have done some more tinkering with the Ruby Parure Tiara, by the way; the middle seems a little less flat this time around. I wonder if one of the three hairpins has been added back in.

Queen Margrethe has worn this green lace dress for this occasion in the past (with these jewels) (and with her trusty Yeti wrap, obvs) and it’s a natural match for the Danish Emerald Parure. The emeralds are part of the Crown Jewels.

Princess Marie wore this gold and white Rikke Gudnitz dress to the Belgian state banquet last year. It shines even more here as it picks up the gold in her Order of the Elephant chain splendidly. She wore her Diamond Floral Tiara, as she usually does.

Because she'll be marrying in 2018, this was Princess Mako's last appearance at this gala, and the countdown of her last appearances in her tiara and parure continues. Her mother, Princess Kiko, was also in her own tiara and parure.

Royal Christmas of the Day: The Windsors at Sandringham

I hope you had/are having a pleasant holiday/holidays/regular weekend (take your pick)! The Windsor family is here to ease us down from our sugar hangovers (please say that doesn't just go for me) with their usual hats n' coats act for their usual Christmas Day walk to church at Sandringham.

The Queen, in BRIGHT orange and a whole lotta diamonds, has been covered at the Jewel Vault, as has her Christmas broadcast and the Duchess of Cornwall's Christmas brooch. Should your tastes find you wishing no scarves, long sleeves, or gloves were needed, the Countess of Wessex has already beat you there with her own version of festive wrapping. Splitting up the electric blues for the day, Princess Beatrice took the hat (with a sadly droopy coat, I am sorry to report) and Princess Eugenie took the coat with some fun color blocking added in.

Tiara Watch of the Day: A Second Night of Nobel Sparkle

They’ve gone and done it again, those Swedish royal ladies. For the second night in a row, I am charmed by one and all. And they’re going for the title of Year’s Most Color Coordinated Family while they’re at it.

A pastel spring palette for all, anchored by the deep blue of Queen Silvia's Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure. The whole thing starts with Crown Princess Victoria's floral dress by Camilla Thulin. Man, I love a floral ball gown.

And that is a BALL GOWN, make no mistake! Grand with a bit of whimsy. With a nature-themed tiara in Princess Lilian’s Laurel Wreath, she’s perfectly coordinated.

Princess Sofia’s throwing in the greens with a caped (!) dress and the return of the emeralds on her wedding tiara. The elastic (or whatever) at the waist seems a little flimsy for the rest of the drama, though I'm prepared to overlook it since we have a case of Tiara Hair Worn Down done right.

It's good, right? As is Princess Madeleine (another member of the list of royals that can handle a tiara worn with hair down, incidentally). Madeleine’s appearance at Carl Philip and Sofia’s wedding in this Elie Saab gown is one of my all-time favorite maternity gala appearances; it’s just as grand the second time, paired again with the Modern Fringe Tiara.
