Tiara Watch of the Day: Triple Tiaras in Sweden

The Swedish royal family is here to keep us in sparkle for another week! (A true public service.) They held one of their regular Representation Dinners last night; King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Sofia attended.

That's a pleasingly orchestrated color palette, isn't it? All muted and tailor-made for that Order of the Seraphim sash and accented with diamonds galore. Princess Sofia's gown ties the whole group together. She wore her Emerald and Diamond Tiara without the emeralds again.

Feels like Queen Silvia uses this basic gown shape often enough that I can no longer tell when one is new or repeated. That's definitely a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," though, because this is really flattering on her. She finished it off with the Connaught Tiara.

Crown Princess Victoria kept this weekend's fringe fest rolling by repeating the Baden Fringe Tiara. She wore an H&M Conscious Exclusive dress we've seen before, but...

...I'm gonna go ahead and say that not every full-length gown is capable of handling a tiara event. This seems too casual. Besides, one never wants one's sash to be smushing one's ruffles.

Tiara Watch of the Day: A Second Night of Nobel Sparkle

They’ve gone and done it again, those Swedish royal ladies. For the second night in a row, I am charmed by one and all. And they’re going for the title of Year’s Most Color Coordinated Family while they’re at it.

A pastel spring palette for all, anchored by the deep blue of Queen Silvia's Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure. The whole thing starts with Crown Princess Victoria's floral dress by Camilla Thulin. Man, I love a floral ball gown.

And that is a BALL GOWN, make no mistake! Grand with a bit of whimsy. With a nature-themed tiara in Princess Lilian’s Laurel Wreath, she’s perfectly coordinated.

Princess Sofia’s throwing in the greens with a caped (!) dress and the return of the emeralds on her wedding tiara. The elastic (or whatever) at the waist seems a little flimsy for the rest of the drama, though I'm prepared to overlook it since we have a case of Tiara Hair Worn Down done right.

Madeleine’s appearance at Carl Philip and Sofia’s wedding in this Elie Saab gown is one of my all-time favorite maternity gala appearances; it’s just as grand the second time, paired again with the Modern Fringe Tiara.

Royal Collection of the Day: Erdem x H&M for Victoria and Mary

You knew that the Erdem x H&M collection was going to be big on the royal scene, right? Erdem = popular with several royal regulars, H&M = popular with several royal regulars, you did the math. We could also deduce that Crown Princess Victoria was likely to be its biggest fan, because she's H&M's biggest royal fan: she's personal friends with the Persson family that runs H&M, she and Prince Daniel paired up with the chain for their GEN-PEP initiative, she's the one that wore an H&M dress to a gala royal wedding. This was expected.

I did not, however, expect quite this level of enthusiasm. Here's what she's worn from the collection so far, all in the last few weeks:

This is the royal equivalent of running through the store screaming, MINE! MINE! Victoria, calm down.

Royal Outfits of the Day: A Swedish Catch Up

We have some recent stuff from the Swedish royal ladies, but first, one that I meant to post about some time ago, and then my attention got predictably dragged elsewhere...

I think evidence of a bright purple choir robe in action should be documented here, don't you? Queen Silvia's dress is a repeat from Yuki (designer Gnyuki Torimaru). He's known for cutting in a circle and creating sculptural designs with draping from there, which can either end up as a wonder of construction or as...well, as a bright purple choir robe. Or both. Take your pick.

This appearance also needs to be documented here because Queen Silvia wore a new (I believe) pearl necklace with an amethyst centerpiece, and anything involving new amethysts needs its day in the sun. I don't really know what's going on with the shape of that centerpiece, okay, but there it is.

This feels like a refreshing color change, no? Very professional. And even a hat (mmm...hat-ish object) to finish out our hat-tastic week. (No fan am I of these not-hat hats, but in this case, it fits the occasion just right.)

Year in Review: Crown Princess Mary and Crown Princess Victoria's Best of 2016

Certain events are basically just guaranteed to make the best of the year list, you know what I mean?

The Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark attended the annual New Year's gala banquet in January.

Mary's year always starts on a high note, and then it's up to the rest of the twelve months to try and beat her most formal appearance of the year. This one wasn't beatable. It's a classic Mary outfit, taking a previously worn ensemble (and a previous yearly best) and reinventing it by pairing her Jesper Høvring skirt with a blue velvet top and her Danish Ruby Parure. So dramatic, so good.

The Crown Princess and the Swedish royal family attended the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in December.

Similarly, it's always up to the Nobel Prize appearance to best whatever Victoria wore the rest of the year, and it so often does. This is a classic Victoria outfit, a custom gown by H&M done in sustainable materials, and making the best of pieces of the Cameo Parure and the Cut Steel Tiara. So dramatic, so good.

She took on the daunting task of matching the incredible sparkle of the Leuchtenberg Sapphires with a disco ball choir robe, which she carries off with more gravitas than you’d think possible when the words “disco ball choir robe” are involved.

Crown Princess Victoria is here to single-handedly make you fall in love with the Cut Steel Tiara, that polarizing non-gemstone diadem. She realizes that she might have left some of you behind even after her magnificent Nobel 2010 appearance, so she’s giving it another shot with this bespoke H&M gown (yes, H&M). This is just so REGAL.

She is again pairing the Cut Steel Tiara with the necklace, bracelet, earrings, and brooch from the Cameo Parure (another polarizing set). I love this pairing so much. It’s special for the occasion, because she’s not often allowed to use the Cameo pieces; plus, the styles fit together so well, since they’re approximately of the same time frame. (If I can whine for two seconds in the face of this gloriousness – and oh look, I can – what do I need to do here to get someone to wear the Cameo Tiara again, eh? Nobody’s worn it since Victoria’s wedding. It’s cruel to make me to love something and then take it away, guys. Whining over.)

Most Conflicting in Wishes

I’ve been waiting for Princess Sofia to wear a dress truly geared towards showcasing the emerald part of her Emerald and Diamond Tiara. I’ve also been waiting for her to wear something other than that Emerald and Diamond Tiara. So, hilariously, she did both at the same time. Her bespoke House of Dagmar emerald green dress was paired with the Cut Steel Bandeau, a piece which we’ve previously seen exclusively on Crown Princess Victoria. It does suit Sofia’s head better than Victoria’s, even though it will never be a tiara highlight for me. She also wore the emerald and diamond earrings from Queen Silvia that she wore last year.

Princess Madeleine went full princess in the most Disney fashion, with an assist from a soft pink Fadi El Khoury ensemble with a big flowered skirt and a blouse top. Expressen reported that she was unhappy with the outfit and the tailors were fixing it into the early hours of this morning. If that’s true: WORTH IT. It’s my favorite Swedish designer in my favorite color for Madeleine, and it’s fantastic.

She wore the Connaught Tiara. This is another example of something special for the event – she was first allowed to wear the tiara for Victoria’s wedding, though she has used the drops on several occasions – and I think she wears it best of all the current Swedish ladies.

There were a few interesting head ornaments in the crowd. Here’s Bettina Bernadotte wearing one of her tiaras, topped by stones in multiple colors (here’s a closer look), for a little modern contrast to the older gems on display.

And finally, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded earlier in the day in Oslo, with the Norwegian royal family in attendance in coordinated blacks. From Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Norwegian designer Mariette comes...an eyelet hoodie dress? Sure, why not.

This is not a gala event - obviously - but that doesn't mean Mette-Marit didn't bring us some interesting jewels. Her earrings are what catch my eye, pricey new numbers in a friendly crescent moon crafted in gold and set with moonstone, black agate, purple chalcedony, and diamonds, from Venyx designer Eugenie Niarchos. They're a fun detail, and she's pulling them off.

While the Swedes get their gala on, the Norwegians go black tie. Crown Princess Mette-Marit stuck to Norwegian design with a dress from the brand Fall Winter Spring Summer (FWSS). It's a very M-M choice, what else can you say? I do like the added touch of her pearl headband.

The King hosts a palace dinner for the Nobel laureates in Sweden, and it's a second tiara event for the royal ladies. (Check out pictures here.) While Queen Silvia wore red and her other go-to Nobel tiara, the Nine Prong Tiara, we had more tiara interest from the princesses:

Many (including myself) thought the Four Button Tiara would be Princess Sofia's first tiara from the family collection, and it turns out we weren't far off. This is way better than her look on night #1, I must say - both dress (from Swedish brand Stylein) and hairdo.

Crown Princess Victoria used Princess Lilian's Laurel Wreath Tiara, along with a repeated Jenny Packham gold gown. I want to like this one more than I do; it's very tall with most of her hairstyles.

Princess Madeleine really brought the tiara interest. She wore the Modern Fringe Tiara, her most predictable choice, but proved she wasn't ready to let the Connaught Tiara go: she's wearing it in necklace format! You can't really see it on top of her Valentino gown, but I don't mind. I'm just glad she piled it on.

Royal Photocall of the Day: July 21

The Swedes decided to get in on the family photocall trend this summer, gathering at Solliden for the press after celebrating Crown Princess Victoria's birthday. This is like a royal version of Keeping up with the Joneses, and I love it.

And...yup, they've hit all the usual royal family photocall requirements: kids who have no idea they shouldn't be going about their normal business, adults crossing their fingers the kids don't have a meltdown, and general awkwardness. That's pretty much it, those are the only requirements. Oh, and a dog. Gotta have the dog in there.

On the sartorial side of things, it's possible that Princess Madeleine has come up with the absolute perfect summer photocall outfit. The top - which The Royals and I informs us is Valentino - is not too casual, and perfect with a cropped pant. A doubly perfect selection when you know you have a runner on your hands. Summer style done right, I say.

Royal Outfits of the Day: June 21

Sweden's royal family attends the Polar Music Prize award ceremony every year, and they did so again last week. Sometimes Crown Princess Victoria uses this event to have a little bit of fun with her outfit, and sometimes that strategy really does pay off. For example:

Talk about working the goddess angle to spectacular effect. Pairing this white Ralph Lauren dress with this H&M Conscious Collection necklace - costume jewelry takes on chain mail - is her most successful use of statement accessories...ever, maybe. Wow.

Royal Style Triplet of the Day: May 12

This looks familiar...

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary hosted a dinner for the Copenhagen Fashion Summit at Amalienborg, where they received the President and First Lady of Honduras.

I predicted Mary would be next to sport this H&M dress after we saw it on Crown Princess Mette-Marit and in two different colors on Crown Princess Victoria. Mary was smart to wait two years after those appearances to give us some time to recover from the overload of this dress in 2014. She was smart to wear it for this occasion, too; the Copenhagen Fashion Summit focuses on sustainability, and this dress is from the H&M Conscious Collection, which has the same focus (H&M also sponsors the summit).

This dress is just screaming out for some shoe interest (hello, see the model). Mary got us part of the way there in yellow pumps, but my wait for something really fierce continues.

Royal Fashion Awards: King Carl Gustaf’s Birthday, Concert and Day Events

The celebrations for King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 70th birthday have been going on all week, building up to today’s festivities. As for our Royal Fashion Awards, well, they’re just beginning…

A dress code of suits for the men at Friday night’s Nordic Museum concert didn’t stop Queen Silvia from bringing the full-length sparkle with a diamond necklace and few bits and bobs from the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure thrown in for good measure, bless.

Her daughters were more of a mixed bag, Princess Madeleine on the shorter side in Erdem and Crown Princess Victoria in a promisingly different silhouette brought down by a bit of over-accessorizing. Enthusiasm appreciated, anyway.


Today, things got started with a morning Te Deum followed by some outdoor tributes – including Prince Oscar’s first balcony appearance! – and a lunch at Stockholm’s City Hall.

Queen Silvia and Princess Madeleine had the same idea for their day outfits, with pink coats and serious hat style from Philip Treacy. I love that Silvia went big without going nuts, and I love her choice of burgundy accessories. Win.

I should be focusing on Madeleine’s hat here, but instead I can’t stop thinking it looks like she has her headphones around her neck when the coat is on. Makes a touch more sense when you see there's a whole garden of a Giambattista Valli dress underneath that pink Alexander McQueen coat.

Victoria’s Dolce & Gabbana striped dress surprised me at first. This turned out to be a good thing, because paired with her big white hat, it was a much-needed anecdote to the run of pastels on display courtesy of most of the rest of the guests. LOVE.

Honorable Attendance Mention

Princess Sofia pulled back her attendance at the birthday events, to no one’s surprise as she just gave birth not even two weeks ago. But she did make a point to attend the Te Deum and balcony appearance, and she looked fabulous in a light Hugo Boss dress with a By Malene Birger coat added outside.

And for everybody else…

An interesting brooch headlined Princess Christina's blue look as she attended with the rest of the King's sisters, Princess Désirée, Princess Birgitta, and Princess Margaretha.

Princess Hisako of Takamado was a second row standout, brighter than the sun and with more hat personality than we usually see from the Japanese imperial ladies. Prince Albert of Monaco, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein, and some of the German royals can also be spotted above.

By the time the party moved outside, a full Where's Waldo? royal spotting game was in play. A minty fresh Queen Margrethe and a cozily wrapped Princess Beatrix quickly became one of the day's best dynamic duos.

Princess Märtha Louise and husband Ari Behn are the sole reps from Norway now (following yesterday's tragic helicopter crash in the country). She always brings the intrigue, in a metallic number that also would have been at home at the previous evening's concert. Crown Princess Mary repeated her Oscar de la Renta coat paired with purple accessories, which obviously that makes me happy. Also present and elegant: Princess Benedikte and the royal couples from Serbia and Romania. (As well as other international royal guests not named here!)

One last thing:

Just so you  know, the Estelle fan club begins with her godmother.

Royal Outfit of the Day: February 12

Is it possible to dislike a dress and to like it on a certain person at the same time?

Yes. The answer is apparently yes. Because this dress itself is a little bit hmmmm (an appreciable departure from solid lace dresses, sure, but just a lot to take in all together, especially with the major earrings), yet this dress on Victoria is basically mmhmmmm (oh, she's working it). If you see what I mean.

The Global Change Award was started by the H&M Conscious Foundation, so naturally Victoria wore a dress, earrings, and clutch from the sustainable H&M Conscious Collection. She's actually giving us a special preview here, because the items created for her are based on a collection that won't be in stores until April. (It's good to be the Crown Princess sometimes.) Her navy dress is made of organic silk and organic cotton; her earrings include Denimite, which is a material made from - you guessed it - recycled denim. So, that a first.

The Swedish royal family has a history of turning up the sartorial volume significantly when it comes to big events. Did they succeed at their prince’s wedding? Well…yes and no. Let’s give out some awards and discuss:

I predicted she would wear the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Tiara, most of us predicted she would wear the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Tiara, she wore the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Tiara. And HUZZAH for that, because it is and remains a sparkly wall of diamonds with gorgeous blue at the top, and you can’t go wrong with that.

She added it to a dress in light lilac silk satin with embroidery of lace, sequins, and stones, all of which was a little bit on the shiny side for me. (Silvia in anything embellished and shiny: also predictable.)

The King wore the mess dress model 1878 uniform of the Admiral of the Fleet with insignia from the Order of the Seraphim, the Order of Vasa, and the Order of the Sword. His medals are Gustav V's Jubilee Medal II, Gustav VI Adolf's Commemorative Medal, the Order of the Polar Star, and the Order of Vasa.

I asked for some tiara switcheroos, and BEHOLD: the Connaught Tiara, worn for the first time by Victoria. I wanted to see that one on the bride, but I’ll settle for it on anyone!

Victoria wore a custom dress from the H&M Conscious Collection – also a surprise because, well, H&M at a royal wedding?! Victoria’s a big supporter of the company but even at that, this one surprised me.

Was it a good surprise? It’s growing on me, I’ll say that. It has the grand scale we’ve come to expect, even if it does appear to be covered in tire tracks. Both Victoria and Prince Daniel were wearing the Order of the Seraphim, and Daniel also wore the Order of the Polar Star.

I could give this to Madeleine just for getting all dolled up when she’s about to pop, but this isn’t a sympathy best; this is a WOW under any circumstances. This soft apricot pink Elie Saab was smoothly adapted for her maternity needs and her diamonds had all the necessary sparkle. As expected, she stuck with her Modern Fringe Tiara, which I'm guessing is the one she finds most comfortable. She added the Vasa Earrings, huge diamond numbers that date all the way back to the Vasa dynasty, and which are probably anything but comfortable.

Madeleine wore the Order of the Seraphim and Chris O’Neill wore the Order of the Polar Star. They brought Princess Leonore with them, and she topped today’s heirloom baby clothing stakes by wearing a dress that goes all the way back to King Gustaf VI Adolf, her great-great-grandfather. (Leonore seemed fascinated by the tiaras during the ceremony. I think this kid and I would get along.)

The Haga Princesses

Listen, I think I’m a bit in love with the Haga Princesses, a.k.a. the four sisters of the King. Princess Margaretha is the best dressed here, in her fabulous Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara, but the rest of them could clearly care less what we think, and I just can’t help but love ‘em a bit for that attitude. Honeybadgers don’t care, man! Princess Christina doesn’t care that I’m tired of her picking the Six Button Tiara over and over again. Princess Désirée doesn’t care that she’s sporting the Cut Steel Tiara with what is basically a hot pink caftan.

And Princess Birgitta REALLY doesn’t care that she’s not, in fact, headed to a beach soirée around her Mallorca home. She’s gonna wear her palazzo pants with a fur tossed on top as the only concession to her northern location, and she doesn't care what you think! I mean, this is basically a jumpsuit with the Baden Fringe Tiara. Don’t you have to love it, just a little bit, at least?? Come on. The absurdity, it’s delicious.
