Royal Events of the Day: The Windsors at Remembrance Ceremonies

As they do every year, the British royal family spent their weekend in solemn and stately mode, attending the Festival of Remembrance on Saturday and Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph in London.

The Queen chose to join the newly retired Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Cornwall on a balcony above the scene at the Cenotaph, a first for this year and what felt like a major passing of the baton moment. (The Queen and the Duchess of Cornwall were also covered at the Jewel Vault; the Queen's brooch is a regular for poppy-holding and Camilla's has some extra special significance for the event.)

The Prince of Wales led the service and laid a wreath for the Queen in addition to his own wreath. The rest of the wreath-laying regulars joined Charles: the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Harry, the Duke of York, the Earl of Wessex, the Princess Royal, and the Duke of Kent.

On another balcony, the Duchess of Cambridge watched the service with Princess Alexandra of Kent and the Countess of Wessex. Both Alexandra and Sophie wore badges from The Rifles; each lady is a Royal Colonel of a different battalion.

Frivolous as it is to talk about the looks on display here (and, well, this happens to be a blog that specializes in the frivolous, says so right on the sidebar), I think it's worth noting what a sharp look this was for Kate. Very dignified. And just right, I thought.

Yesterday was Denmark's turn on the merry-go-round of parliament openings. Members of the royal family - Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim, Princess Mary, and Princess Benedikte - were present to observe the proceedings (no speech from the throne here, nope). Hats in place and ready to be evaluated:

I am so interested in Crown Princess Mary's selection of purple accessories - a repeated purple Jane Taylor pillbox with a purple purse - to go with this blue-ish Claes Iverson coat. (The coat's a repeat from the Belgian state visit.) I find am now very personally invested in purple as the new neutral go-to.

Princess Benedikte sported a towering pile of plain hat bases, and she made it work because she is Benedikte and this is her superpower.

Look at that tilting topper and then look at Princess Marie, because do you think that her hat should've chosen either the net or the flower? I do, but I don't know which one I'd pick. I love her in a brimmed hat anyway, and I extra-approve of a hat that can cover the eyes at an event like this. You know catching a shot of the royal guests mid-blink and calling it a nap is a tradition.

For the pièce de résistance...Queen Margrethe wearing her trademark Teletubby hat! This hat gets a little sillier every time she wears it, which is how I've come to grow rather fond of this strange little chapeau. Keep on keeping on, Your Maj.

Royal Outfit of the Day: The Countess of Wessex Hats Up

It feels like it's been too long since we saw the British royals in Special Occasion Mode. Hats and the lot, you know. I suppose it hasn't actually been that long and you have to take the Queen out of the equation, because hats and the lot is her Permanent Mode, but still. What I'm trying to say here is that I'm delighted to see that Sophie hatted up nice and proper last week.

You know this is Special Occasion Mode because it's a repeat from a Very Special Occasion: QEII's 90th birthday service in 2016.

This is such a Sophie classic. It's two of her favorite designers, a bespoke Suzannah coat dress in a sleek silhouette with a Jane Taylor hat and a sweeping updo. She loves a midi length, and this one is careful not to overwhelm. Chic, I say.

Royal Gathering of the Day: The Belgians and British Mark the Passchendaele Centenary

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a two day trip to Belgium on Sunday and Monday to join the King and Queen of the Belgians for events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the beginnings of the Battle of Passchendaele, or the Third Battle of Ypres, in World War I. On Sunday, they attended the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial.

We have our little fashion wheelhouse here, and this is one of the times when everything passes muster in a "let's not talk about the fashion too much" sort of way. That's precisely what you want. The Duchess paired up two repeats for the first events, her Alexander McQueen coat from Princess Charlotte's christening and her hat from Trooping the Colour 2015. She also wore a brooch she's used in the past.

The Queen chose a new outfit with a lace coat over a satiny dress, topped by a new Philip Treacy hat. It's a nice choice for an event that went into the evening, but still included full hats (which are usually more of a daytime thing).

The Prince of  Wales joined the group on Monday at Tyne Cot Cemetery. Sir Timothy Laurence, husband of the Princess Royal, was there for both days; he is Vice Chairman of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Once again, I think it basically checks out, sartorially speaking. The second day saw a new lace-topped dress from Natan appeared for Queen Mathilde, with a hat from Fabienne Delvigne. For the Duchess, it was a new Catherine Walker coat dress.

What intrigues me here is Kate's use of jewels, because I think jewel selections can help to convey, in a quiet manner, events of greater significance. The Duchess of Cambridge wore brooches on both days. While she's not a newcomer to brooches and while they definitely serve a functional purpose here - securing her traditional poppy for remembrance - they're enough of a step out of the usual to make it special.

Her brooch on the second day is a new loan to her from the Queen, the Pearl and Diamond Leaf Brooch, which I've covered at the Jewel Vault (not that there's much to say about it, it's kind of a mystery). She added in the Collingwood Pearl and Diamond Earrings from Diana, Princess of Wales, which she debuted at the Spanish state banquet. I'd call it adding a layer of gravitas to the ensemble, a wholly appropriate thing for such an event. Respectfully well played.

Aaaaaaand we're back to Britain's annual hat festival, with royal goodies from Days 2 and 3 (which is Gold Cup Day, or traditionally Ladies' Day, and often the moment many reserve for their best hats).

The jumpy claps over here when I saw Eugenie sporting one of my favorite Preen dresses, you have no idea. I think this might be as close as it gets to a universally flattering shape, and it certainly flatters this York sister in both cut and color. LOOOOOVE. And then there's Beatrice, which would be a love if it weren't for one big caveat. When I first saw this, I thought it was an odd dress, designed to make it look like she'd paired a longer sleeve shirt underneath the short sleeve dress. But it turns out...

I keep waiting for the new Countess of Snowdon to bring it like I know she can. I'll keep waiting. In the meantime, of the multiple royal ladies trying out that ubiquitous royal palette of cream and white on Days 2 and 3 (like Zara Tindall), I'm giving my blue ribbon to the Countess of Wessex.

A breath of fresh air, I declare!

I'm so enjoying the mother-daughter act happening in the Dubai contingent. First we had matching pattern + white outfits on Day 1; now we have the sharing of a universal rule for Ascot success: a solid color dress is the perfect canvas for your froofy hat. Princess Eugenie co-signs this strategy.

Butterflies for the young sheikha are such a perfect touch of whimsy. I'm clearly charmed, since I don't normally make this many comments on the apparel of the kids. (Princess Haya posted some sweet pics of the family on her Instagram, noting that Jalila has been their lucky charm at Ascot this year.)

Right, enough with the exclamation points. We have today a review of Day 1 of Royal Ascot, which went down on Tuesday. Over yonder at the Vault, you will find appearances from the Queen, Day 1's winner for Most Colorful, and the Duchess of Cornwall, holder of the Best Jewel title. What a beautiful Claire Mischevani dress for Beatrice. So delicate, and yet also so stifling. It looks hot. It's been awfully toasty over there. Princess Eugenie wisely decided to put comfort first by continuing her sleeveless trend from Trooping the Colour and I can't blame her one bit.

Zara Tindall was on the same wavelength as Princess Eugenie, and it's hard to go wrong with a solid electric blue dress. This one's from Escada. But for me, Autumn's streak of interesting royal wear continues. Even if I did later realize that this is totally a "replikate" version of the red print dress Kate wore in Canada last year. (Do you think Kate did a double take?)

Worth noting the Princess Royal was apparently accommodating the heat as well on Day 1, choosing just a dress instead of her usual dress + coat uniform. She got hug and a kiss from her daughter, like everyone else did. Zara seems a snuggly delight.

I suppose I'd rather have an Ascot strategy than an entire 2017 strategy, if a choice needs to be made. As promised, Princess Haya is here to up our couture level for the year. This hat is FABULOUS. It would be even more fabulous, though, if separated from its twin dress, methinks. Too much of a good thing. Haya does rack up some bonus points for teaching her mini me the right way to do Ascot; the young lady with the jaunty hat and pattern combo is Sheikha Al Jalila, Haya and Sheikh Mohammed's daughter, making her Ascot debut.

(You will also note that the 96-year-old Duke of Edinburgh, as well as the 81-year-old Duke of Kent, chose to wear morning dress instead of their heavy uniforms and big bearskin hats this year. Makes sense.)

I do love this embellished collar jacket on Cams. Why? Well, because she once wore it with one of her most fascinating (and enormous) brooches. Instead of repeating that orange stone pin, she used her diamond Cosmos Clip Brooches and her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings. The coat really could have used a bigger brooch statement this time around.

Speaking of pretty in pink, combining a magenta hat with a jade green dress is MUCH more my speed. Unexpected, and perfect. That's another well played royal appearance from Autumn, who joined the balcony this year with husband Peter and daughters Savannah and Isla.

Why wouldn't you go with a light floral on a hot summer day, eh? I can find nothing to argue with in either of these choices. Even Beatrice's fondness for a boater hat - which can sometimes end up a little unintentionally comical - works here.

More Kents - Kents everywhere! - occupied the right side of the balcony. Julia Ogilvy (daughter-in-law of Princess Alexandra) is a standout in the center with her huge hat and a tan background floral dress that fits right in with what the Yorks brought to the party. Also of note: Lady Amelia Windsor (granddaughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and recently in the news as a Dolce & Gabbana model) is sporting a navy and white turban-thingy borrowed from her mother, the Countess of St. Andrews, who wore it to the Queen's birthday service last year.

A Wedding for the Weekend: Pippa Middleton Gets Married

It might not technically be a royal wedding, but we're not ones to complain about a little extra bridal glamour, are we? We are not. Let's have a little looksee - just a brief one - at the bride of the weekend and her royal guests...

Pippa Middleton, sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, married James Matthews at St. Mark's Church, Englefield Green, England.

The bride's dress comes from Giles Deacon. It features a high neckline and cap sleeve with hand appliquéd bespoke silk cotton lace designed to create the illusion of a no seam dress. The corseted bodice is embroidered with pearls and the underskirt has layers of organza and tulle.

With her pearl-embroidered tulle veil by milliner Stephen Jones, Pippa wore a Maidenhair Fern tiara and matching headpiece from Robinson Pelham, the jewelers who also made her earrings; the earrings are the same ones she wore to her sister's royal wedding in 2011 and are companions to Kate's wedding earrings. I can't say I follow Pippa's style at all, and yet this feels just right for her, doesn't it?

The Duchess of Cambridge was on hand to wrangle the train and the wee bridal party, which included Prince George and Princess Charlotte (in bespoke outfits from Pepa & Co.). Kate chose Alexander McQueen for her blush pink dress, Jane Taylor for her matching hat, and Kiki McDonough for her earrings (yup, another new pair!). It's a lovely and understated look, with many comparisons to similar pieces she's worn in the past - something I'm sure will win her much praise for not overshadowing her sister. I think I might have preferred a sleeker hat, but if I'm honest, those percher hats she adores are a hard sell for me in the first place.

My wedding guest swoons for the day belong to Princess Eugenie, who looks faaaaabulous! The perfect dress shape for her (it's from Paule Ka, per Polka Poppins on Twitter), and she's keeping the York sisters love of interesting shoes alive with a little added color. LOVE.

I'll also never miss a sighting of Lady Gabriella Windsor, daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Wearing her usual picks - Catherine Walker with a Philip Treacy hat - she's really got the old world royal elegance down pat.

The British royal family were out en masse yesterday with hats in place. They gathered for the dedication of the Iraq and Afghanistan memorial honoring the service and duty of both civilians and military personnel in those conflicts. The Queen led the crowd in vibrant royal blue, and she (and her brooch details) were covered here at the Jewel Vault.

Following in Her Maj's blue footsteps, the Duchess of Cambridge gave this Michael Kors coat its best outing yet by adding blue accessories - most importantly, an actual hat with an actual brim. You know I love it when she kicks up her hat game. (She's actually giving me shades of Crown Princess Mary here, who paired an electric blue hat with a neutral suit once to my great delight. It's a more matchy version, of course, which is Kate's way.)

Meanwhile, the Countess of Wessex also paired an old outfit with a different hat, which does not have the same enhancing effect. I prefer this Azzedine Alaïa dress with the Christmas hat.

Both the Duchess of Cornwall and Sophie are wearing regimental brooches from The Rifles, since they are each Royal Colonels of different battalions. This is a subdued outfit for Camilla - who manages to make even the biggest hat on the dais look subtle - and is perfectly paired with one of her favorite signature pearl and diamond chokers.

The Princess Royal and the Duchess of Gloucester round us out for the day, doing their usual thing. Although I am left feeling that Anne's sporting the most exuberant hat decoration of them all, which is usually not the usual thing.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the Guild of Health Writers Conference on Monday.

It's Kate in Oscar de la Renta (which I love) and a rich jewel tone (also love), so why don't I love this more? I think I'm going to blame the pleats on the skirt for this one.

Crown Princess Mary opened an exhibition of silver jewelry in Aarhus on Wednesday.

This skirt's a little more my speed. I know, it's a shocker: I prefer the outfit with the purple hat. Add a purple hat to just about anything and I'll be on board, that's just the way it is. (Also, I'm adding "opening a jewelry exhibition" to my running list of royal duties I'd actually volunteer for, just FYI.)

I hope everyone had/is having a happy holiday! We have, as always, some Windsor fashions to chat about, courtesy of their traditional Christmas church parade.

Parades, this year. The Cambridges spent their Christmas with Kate's side, but they still brought along their family coordination act. Accessorizing with a faux fur collar and the best pair of shoes she debuted this year was an instant upgrade for Kate's repeated Hobbs coat.

The rest of the fam marched to church at Sandringham without the Queen, who had a heavy cold. (Her Christmas broadcast has been covered at the Vault, of course.) I think they put on a fairly chic show, though:

I'm all for the Duchess of Cornwall and Autumn Phillips leading the way in their chic blue coats - and for some more extra fur at the collar. Camilla accessorized with her sapphire and diamond butterfly brooch.

As per usual, I find that the York sisters' hats bear little relation to the rest of their outfits, but in this case, these coats - chic though they are - could use a little pepping up.

Refreshingly ditching the coat in a cozy wool-blend knit dress from Azzedine Alaïa (per the Countess of Wessex Blog), the Countess of Wessex was a standout in red. The drama of the Jane Taylor hat - which I'll wager we'll see again at Ascot some day - makes the outfit without taking it over, thanks to the black color choice. Definitely my Christmas best. Et toi?

Princess Haya's feather explosion from Day 1 still holds this year's top Ascot Spirit prize, but Princess Eugenie's deserves an honor of its own. This Jess Collett hat isn't over the top, but it is a serious hat upgrade for Eugenie's personal style, and that's what I want to see at Ascot.

Eugenie's hat was a nice curvy contrast to Princess Beatrice's overly flat hat. She tried valiantly to match the tremendous success of her orange and blue topper from last year, but alas, I suspect nothing will ever top that. I suppose we can give some points here for building the most oddly specific subset of hats around (how many orange and blue hats does a person need?), and for a second day of royal granddaughters echoing their royal granny's color scheme.

Before we move on, did you spot the bonus royal in the first pic? It's a purple-clad Princess Sarvath El Hassan of Jordan! Princess Sarvath and her husband, Prince Hassan Bin Talal, have been at Ascot several times; he was Jordan's crown prince for years, and the couple still pop up at various Euro royal events. She's an interesting Ascot attendee because a small flower or a fascinator is about as into the hat thing as she gets. I suppose no one argues with the Queen's guests about the Ascot rules.

Speaking of Princess Haya, she reined it in (see what I did there) for Day 2 with a sleek but giant pillbox hat. It's a retro look that allllllmost works for me, but the open jacket moving around just added unnecessary bulk to the outfit. So close.

She was back to her big hat ways for Day 3, in tip-to-toe red.

Ascot continues on Friday and Saturday. Will the royals bring us anything else fun to discuss, or are they all tapped out? We shall see.
