Royal Outfit Grab Bag of the Day: September 13

One question mark, two exclamation marks:

Queen Rania received a humanitarian award on Sunday at the Celebrity Fight Night Italy benefiting The Andrea Bocelli Foundation and The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.
In the midst of thinking to myself how dedicated Rania is to her humanitarian work, as she received another honor for it, I also couldn't stop wondering about her curious choice of shawl and shoe color - blue, with a red dress - and why she needed to carry that shawl around in every single picture from the evening. (Hey, I have a frivolity disclaimer on this blog for a reason.) Turns out it's not a shawl at all.
Atelier Versace Fall 2016
It's a train with two skinny pieces of blue and red, and it's attached from the back of the shoulder all the way down. And she carried it everywhere, except when she needed both hands to make her speech and get her award. (You can see it in action on the runway here.) I never thought I'd be rooting for an unrelated shawl, but here we are.

The Countess of Wessex attended the St. John Ambulance's Everyday Heroes Awards last week.
This is hot. I would've loved a strappy shoe here, but that doesn't change the hotness factor.
Stella McCartney dress, per the Countess of Wessex Blog
She's also managed to score a hit from the hit-or-miss Stella McCartney, which is a win on its own.

Princess Charlene and the princely family attended the annual Pique Nique Monegasque this weekend.
This is lovely. Precisely the thing for a beautiful day outdoors...when one is a princess, making an official appearance, of course. Which she is, and therefore she hit it just right.
Vilshenko dress
This is also the best royal Vilshenko dress we've seen so far. Add that to the list of achievements.

Monday Tidbits for August 15: A Tiara Double Take and Added Cuteness

Here we go:

--Here's The Gyalsey to start your Monday off right. Bhutan's heir has been making visits with his parents, meeting his people, brightening everybody's day. Your basic baby stuff, in other words.
His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck Facebook

--A little tiara appearance we missed, from the wedding of Prince Maximilian of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Franziska Balzer in Germany. As was pointed out by ReeceT21 in the comments last week, the bride's tiara matches the tiara worn by Princess Tatiana of Greece last year. It's a Bulgari tiara, loaned by Tatiana for Prince Carl Philip's wedding, now either loaned again or another of the same model. [Hello]

--Think I might be into this dress worn by Queen Rania to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Basic, but not.

--As you've likely heard, the Duke of Westminster passed away suddenly of a heart attack last week. The family name has come up here before primarily in relation to their quite spectacular tiara collection, which we have covered in the past. (And since it does come up, the estate is held in a trust.) [Telegraph, Guardian]

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault, QEII officially kicked her summer holiday into gear.

Coming up this week: Olympic things and more...

Tidbits is your place throughout the week to share things we haven't covered yet and for all your off topic chats. Enjoy!

Sunday Tidbits for June 26: Mirror, Mirror on the Dress

Tidbits ahoy:

--The Norwegian royal court published a new photo of King Harald with Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Ingrid Alexandra, as they mark the 25th anniversary of Harald and Sonja's consecration. The picture, taken in front of the Norwegian crown, recreates a 2006 photo which marked the 100th anniversary of the coronation of King Haakon VII and Queen Maud. More on some of the recent Silver Jubilee events coming up this week.
2016: Torgrim Melhuus, TiTT Melhuus as / NDR / Det kongelige hoff
2006: Lasse Berre, Det kongelige hoff

--Zara Tindall, who won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics in team eventing, has missed out on selection for the British equestrian team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. [BBC]

--She won't be the only royal rider absent in Rio: Princess Nathalie of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg has said her horse is not stable enough to compete. Nathalie won a bronze medal in team dressage for Denmark in 2008, and also competed in London in 2012. [Der Westen]

--I am intrigued by Queen Rania's Loewe mirror-embellished dress, but I wonder if people would keep checking themselves out in your shoulder all night long. [Lyst]

--The Earl and Countess of Wessex were in Canada for a visit this week, where the sartorial highlight was a little LBD on Day 2. For Sophie, just to clarify. [Countess of Wessex Blog]

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault, a society wedding went down (more on that tiara on Thursday). Also, the Queen has been tweeting again, but is still not live tweeting Downton Abbey like I asked her to. I mean, I can send her the DVDs.

Coming up this week: Flower power in Norway, and more...

Royal Fashion Awards: Royal Ascot 2016, Part 3

The year's fanciest hat parade has come to an end, and we have just a few awards left to hand out. (This, by the way, is just a selection of royals from Days 4 and 5.)

Most Conflicted Combo
Princess Haya, Day 4
This dress is half pretty ballerina and half dancing Liesl, which should make it my favorite thing ever. But then there's also an artichoke in mourning smack dab in the middle of her forehead, and now I really just don't know.

Best in Show
Princess Beatrice, Day 5
Royal attendance always peters out by the end of Ascot. The Queen was awarded for sticking around to the end with a win on the last day, and a trophy presented by her granddaughter. And Princess Beatrice awarded me for sticking around to the end by wearing what has become my favorite outfit for Ascot 2016.
Burberry Prorsum dress, Gina Foster hat
You may recall me gushing about this Burberry Prorsum dress in the past, when it appeared in a different print on Crown Princess Mary, so it's no surprise that I adore this version too. I can't wait to see Beatrice take this for a spin with a hotter shoe, but for now, the hat is all the embellishment it needs. LOVE.

Best in Continued Ascot Spirit
Princess Eugenie, Day 5
One fun skirt, a second big hat, and three cheers for bringing the quirkiness that Ascot deserves. She's had a good run with a nice mix of sophistication and fun, and I like this cheery skirt and its tip toward the fun side.
Alice + Olivia skirt and top, Nerida Fraiman hat
And hey, in the event that Ascot gets attacked by a sudden hail storm, she's all set!

Best in Gents
The Prince of Wales, Overall
Don't forget, the gentlemen deserve some appreciation too. The Prince of Wales was my standout this year, attending for four days instead of his usual one or two (Day 5 is shown above). As always, he gets it right by paying attention to the tiny details. His tie pins, for example: if you missed this fun discovery in the comments on our first Ascot post, one of his jeweled tie pins happens to be the cypher of King Boris III of Bulgaria. (Thanks to Floriana for pointing it out and Deanna for solving the mystery!) Why? Why not, I suppose.

Who wins your 2016 Best of Ascot title?

Royal Fashion Awards: Royal Ascot 2016, Part 2

Previously, on Ascot: The Blog... We left off with the fashions of Day 1 and most of Day 2; over yonder at the Jewel Vault, we've covered the Queen, Cams, and a bit of Anne in her Eliza Doolitte best (plus, a brand new brooch from Her Maj!).

"Hey, twinsies!"
We pick up with a leftover from Day 2 and the fruits of Day 3, which was Ladies' Day. The Queen set the tone for the day by hilariously matching outfits with the Gold Cup-winning jockey, and the interesting color combos and fancy hats continued from there:

Best in Ascot Spirit, Again
Princess Eugenie, Day 3
and Nearest Miss at Ascot Millinery Magic
Princess Beatrice, Day 3
Princess Haya's feather explosion from Day 1 still holds this year's top Ascot Spirit prize, but Princess Eugenie's deserves an honor of its own. This Jess Collett hat isn't over the top, but it is a serious hat upgrade for Eugenie's personal style, and that's what I want to see at Ascot.
Eugenie's dress from Roksanda; Beatrice's dress from ADEAM
Eugenie's hat was a nice curvy contrast to Princess Beatrice's overly flat hat. She tried valiantly to match the tremendous success of her orange and blue topper from last year, but alas, I suspect nothing will ever top that. I suppose we can give some points here for building the most oddly specific subset of hats around (how many orange and blue hats does a person need?), and for a second day of royal granddaughters echoing their royal granny's color scheme.
Before we move on, did you spot the bonus royal in the first pic? It's a purple-clad Princess Sarvath El Hassan of Jordan! Princess Sarvath and her husband, Prince Hassan Bin Talal, have been at Ascot several times; he was Jordan's crown prince for years, and the couple still pop up at various Euro royal events. She's an interesting Ascot attendee because a small flower or a fascinator is about as into the hat thing as she gets. I suppose no one argues with the Queen's guests about the Ascot rules.

Also Best in Ascot Spirit
Countess of Wessex, Day 3
Doing her part for the Ladies' Day cause in Suzannah and Jane Taylor: the Mother of Coral Dragon Wings.

Closest Call in Retro Style
Princess Haya, Day 2
Speaking of Princess Haya, she reined it in (see what I did there) for Day 2 with a sleek but giant pillbox hat. It's a retro look that allllllmost works for me, but the open jacket moving around just added unnecessary bulk to the outfit. So close.
Chanel Couture Fall 2015
She was back to her big hat ways for Day 3, in tip-to-toe red.

Also present on Day 3 but not pictured here: Princess Michael the Caped Crusader, Princess Alexandra, and a pretzel-brooched Princess Royal.

Ascot continues on Friday and Saturday. Will the royals bring us anything else fun to discuss, or are they all tapped out? We shall see.

Tiara Thursday: Queen Noor's Diamond Sunburst Tiara

Quick programming note: We'll be covering the birthday service in Britain tomorrow, so our post will be up later than usual!

Our look at Queen Rania's small Boucheron tiara last month reminded me of one particularly interesting diadem in the Jordanian royal family. It's a tiara that I often forget about, only to fall in love with it all over again every time it's mentioned. This tiara belongs to King Abdullah's stepmother, Queen Noor.
Queen Noor wearing her Diamond Sunburst tiara

Queen Noor is one of the few royals with an American background. Born Lisa Halaby in Washington, D.C., she studied architecture and urban planning at Princeton and her work eventually introduced her to King Hussein of Jordan. She became his fourth wife in 1978, adopting the name Noor Al-Hussein ("Light of Hussein"). They had four children together and were married until Hussein died in 1999.
The tiara's original format
A queen consort requires a tiara, and Queen Noor wore this contemporary diamond design for almost all of her tiara occasions. The tiara features diamond rays with variation provided by larger diamonds dotted throughout and on top of the rays. Early photos of the tiara show a design closely resembling that of a traditional diamond fringe tiara, where the rays are graduated towards a single tall center point (above).

The tiara's later format
Noor seems to have altered the tiara to her tastes fairly early on. It was adjusted so that the rays graduate in height between several taller points, adding variation to the top line and moving it away from that classic fringe shape. The end result feels like a diamond fringe tiara met and fell in love with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, combining two of my favorite tiara styles. It has the same feel as Queen Alia's Cartier Tiara, worn by King Hussein's third wife, and also reminds me a little of the Japanese Pearl Sunburst Tiara.

Video: Queen Noor wears this tiara at 1:32, for a banquet in London marking the 50th anniversary of VE Day, 1995, with bonus British royal tiara spotting. (This is the event pictured at the top of the post.)
Queen Noor has understandably moved away from most state occasions since King Hussein passed away. (As a tangential note, her son Prince Hamzah was originally named crown prince to King Abdullah, but the Jordanian rules of succession allow the king some flexibility to name his heir, and the title was eventually removed from Hamzah and later granted to Abdullah's own son.) This means that the tiara is a little bit unused at the moment - hence my tending to forget about it. I'll be happy to fall in love once again whenever it reappears.

Are you fancying this fringe-ish diadem?

Sunday Tidbits for June 5: Two New Friends, One Missing Tie

This week's dose of cuteness comes not from more adorable official portraits, for a change. It comes from wee animals. So, totally different.

--Accompanied by her entourage (including mom Princess Madeleine and dad Chris O'Neill), Princess Leonore made her first official visit to her duchy, Gotland. She frolicked in a picturesque meadow and made friends with Haidi the pony, her christening gift from the duchy, before stealing on one of Haidi's carrots for a little snack. [Hello]

--Crown Princess Mette-Marit's been traveling on her scenic Literature Train, which she's done for the past couple years. A train car is converted to a library open to all, and the point is to encourage a love of reading at every stop. She has tiaras and her own bookmobile. Mette-Marit knows how to live. [NRK]

--I would very much like to swoop around in Queen Rania's dress right here. (It's from Etro. I've had my eye on the coat version - in, you know, an if-I-had-my-own-royal-coat-museum sort of way.)

--Over at the Jewel Vault, busy season is kicking off with a day at the races and a round of guesses for this year's Ascot brooches.

--"Where's your bloody tie?" One could say Prince Harry has just made the unfortunate discovery that not everyone appreciates his more casual approach. Or one could say that - in giving a group of D-Day veterans an opening to tease him as much as they please - he's just discovered the best royal ice breaker yet. [Sun]

--And finally, Princess Leonore isn't the only one making new friends from the animal kingdom. Queen Margrethe's annual summer cruise on the royal yacht is providing her with cuteness opportunities of her own. (No word on whether she stole any of this little piggy's snacks, though.)

Coming up this week: Sweden celebrates National Day, and more...

Wednesday Tidbits for June 1: Skirts and Brides and More

In case you missed it over the weekend, I updated the post on Prince Oscar's christening to include the official photos released by the court. While we're sharing photos...

--Princess Madeleine also shared on Facebook some adorable shots of Princesses Estelle and Leonore: "My sister and I are blessed as mothers of these two sweet little girls who adore each other!" [Facebook]
Anna-Lena Ahlström, The Royal Court

--Queen Rania wore a fascinating skirt for Jordan's Independence Day last week, featuring intricate embroidery from Jordanian label HamaFashion. I do love that she went for something special and something from a local designer for such an important occasion. (And she wasn't the only one: Princess Salma's red and black ensemble is also from the label, and was previously worn by Rania.) [PopSugar, Instagram]

--LOVE the red dress from Goat Fashion that Princess Sofia picked for an engagement last week. Textbook perfect dress for a royal returning to work after having a baby. [ParisMatch]

--It's busy season at the Jewel Vault: a couple new photos from that birthday photoshoot with Annie Leibovitz are out, there was a garden party and a new brooch sighting, and the Queen took a spin on a seriously boss ride.

--One last bit of QEII news: Buckingham Palace's summer exhibition will feature her wedding gown and her coronation gown, on display together for the first time. It's getting harder and harder to resist... [Telegraph]

--A uniformed Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, while Prince Michael of Kent joined the ceremonies at the battle's last surviving vessel. [ITV]

--And finally, a grand wedding was held in Spain over the weekend, where an Emilia Wickstead-clad Lady Charlotte Wellesley (daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Wellington) married Alejandro Santo Domingo. Weddings like these, I don't normally cover - although King Juan Carlos, the Duchess of Cornwall, Andrea Casiraghi, and Tatiana Santo Domingo did attend - but I must say this: this gown better launch Emilia Wickstead to the top of the designer list for the next British royal wedding dress. I don't care that there is no such wedding currently on the books, just put.her.on.the.list. No shiny fabric! No lace! It's practically a wedding miracle. The back, with that detachable watteau train and the graduated decoration on that veil, is officially my new obsession. [Vogue, Hello]

Coming up this week: The Netherlands, and Spain, and the Netherlands in Spain...

Tiara Thursday (with Bonus State Visit): Queen Rania’s Boucheron Bracelet Tiara

Jordan’s King Abdullah and Queen Rania are in Belgium for a state visit this week. A state banquet with King Philippe and Queen Mathilde offers the rare (these days) chance to see Queen Rania in a tiara, which is exciting…even if her particular tiara choice is not so exciting.
Belgian Monarchy
Squint real hard and you’ll see that Rania has selected her Boucheron Bracelet Tiara for the occasion. It’s her most frequently worn tiara over the past few years, but we haven’t covered it here – until now.

Queen Rania's Boucheron Bracelet Tiara
Boucheron made this tiara for Queen Rania, and she debuted it in 2008. It’s a modern design with two simple rows of diamond on either side of the head meeting in the middle with a swirl. Three drop diamonds dangle from the ends of the rows in the center. As the name suggests, it can be used as a tiara or as a bracelet.
The tiara made high profile appearances marking the tenth anniversary of King Abdullah’s reign in 2009 and at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden in 2010. Tiara events for Rania are rare at best these days. My tiara loving heart wishes she’d go all out when she does get a chance to sport one (we’ve covered two she’s worn – the Boucheron Emerald Ivy Tiara and Queen Alia’s Cartier Tiara, neither of which she owns personally – and there are at least two more), but I am not surprised that she opts for the sleeker, smaller model more often than not. It suits her and it suits the modern style with which she goes about her queenly business.

She opted for the Boucheron Bracelet Tiara again at last night’s Belgian state banquet, worn with a stunning pair of diamond earrings. Queen Mathilde wore the bandeau portion of the Nine Provinces Tiara. I thought a visit from another monarchy might have brought out the full version of the tiara (with its upper arches and large diamond collets), but she correctly interpreted what her guest would bring.

Sash swaps were in full swing: Jordan’s Supreme Order of the Renaissance for Queen Mathilde, the Order of al-Hussein bin Ali for King Philippe, and Belgium’s Order of Leopold for both King Abdullah and Queen Rania.
Mathilde picked up on the red stripe in her Jordanian sash in stellar style in this red gown, with some tiers at the bottom and sequin fun at the top. A little bit of sparkle, a little bit of movement, and a great shape for her.

Queen Rania’s Balmain skirt was made entirely of sparkle and movement, basically.
On the Balmain runway
Vogue
This reminds me of the black skirt Queen Máxima wore in Denmark last year. Much like Máxima, Rania made the simplest possible tiara choice – in this case, the Boucheron Bracelet Tiara was the right pick.

We’ll end with the beginning, the official welcome yesterday. King Abdullah and Queen Rania arrived late Tuesday, with official day 1 stuff happening on Wednesday.
Queen Rania Instagram
I'm giving everything I've got to Mathilde here: LOVE. What a perfect spring state visit welcoming outfit. She was on point yesterday.

Sunday Tidbits for May 8: State Visits Ahoy

I'm looking in my crystal ball (also known as the calendar) and I'm seeing tiaras in our future...

--We are in the thick of spring state visit season right now. This week, Luxembourg heads to Finland and Sweden welcomes Chile. Next week, Jordan visits Belgium. The week after that, Norway hosts Poland. Mexico's trip to the Netherlands scheduled for the end of May has unfortunately been postponed, but a visit from Sweden to Bhutan has been announced for June!

--And on that note, awwwww.
May's desktop calendar from yellow.bt, featuring HRH The Gyalsey

--We talked about one past royal attendee at the Met Gala this week, and here are the two present at this year's bash, Queen Rania and Charlotte Casiraghi. Quoth the Fug Girls, Charlotte "isn’t just being worn by this cracked out Gucci. She’s being dragged through the Met by it." [Go Fug Yourself]

--I tell you what, the Duchess of Cornwall knows how to live. First she hangs out with a bunch of legends at a reception for British Academy Award Winners while wearing some pricey new gems in malachite (and we've already covered them at the Vault), then she meets Tom Hiddleston. In response to silly stories that he broke royal protocol by putting his arm around Camilla (slow news week, eh? Between this and the earth-shattering news that the Queen gets bruises just like everyone else...), a Clarence House rep said, "I think she quite enjoyed it!" INDEED. [ITV, People]

--These little sparkleblergh dresses are Queen Máxima's jam right now. She repeated one for the Liberation Day concert this week. [Hello]

--Prince Henrik donned a spring green blazer and went for a ride at Tivoli, because what's royal retirement for, if not for that? [ParisMatch]

--Over at the Jewel Vault: A bright return to public engagements for the Queen, and a look at her special outfit for Princess Margaret's wedding.

--And finally, Prince Harry has hit the shores of the United States for the Invictus Games in Orlando - interviews, making friends with service dogs, the whole nine - and, well, let's just say he really knows his audience. [Celebuzz, People]

Sunday Tidbits for April 17: A Bit of What We've Been Neglecting

ICYMI, the Cambridges wrapped up their tour and I updated Friday's post with the last of the outfits. With that done and dusted, let's check in with what else has been going on:

--Crown Princess Mette-Marit visited Tanzania with UNAIDS. She met mothers with HIV whose children were born without the virus, and saw how young people are getting involved in the AIDS response. She's been very active with this cause for several years now. [The Royal Court]

--I'm not going to make you go cold turkey on Bhutan, I'm not a monster. The King and Queen's new baby, The Gyalsey, had his naming ceremony yesterday. He has been named Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck. I'll quote the King's speech on the significance:
Jigme means fearless. It symbolizes great courage to overcome any challenge that he may confront in future as he serves our country.

Namgyel means victorious in all directions and victory over all obstacles. It is a name taken from the revered Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, who enabled the Dharma to flourish in all directions as prophesied by Guru Rinpoche.

Wangchuck is the name of the royal lineage and dynasty.
His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck Facebook
This picture of Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck with his grandfather, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, pretty much just reduces me to squeaks:

--Did you notice that Crown Princess Mary disappeared for a couple weeks? She was just taking a course at Harvard, NBD. She spent two weeks in Boston at the "Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century" course put on by the Harvard Kennedy School as part of her work with the Young Global Leaders. Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Queen Mathilde have also done courses at Harvard in the past through YGL. [Hello]

--The Earl and Countess of Wessex have been out and about with the fam this week. Both kids, Louise and James, joined in as they visited the Wild Place Project at Bristol Zoo (and met 9-week-old Afia, a Western lowland gorilla delivered by c-section earlier this year). Yesterday, Girl Guide Lady Louise joined Sophie to open Girlguiding's London headquarters. [Countess of Wessex Blog]

--Queen Letizia is just trolling me now, with these leather culottes. [Zimbio]

--Here's Queen Rania, always interesting, at a screening of the documentary Salam Neighbor in Georgetown. [Instagram; thanks, Casey!]

--I'm not going to miss a chance to give you the Princess Royal in full uniformed splendor. HRH took the salute at Britannia Royal Naval College as Officer Cadets celebrated the end of training at Lord High Admiral’s Divisions. [Facebook]

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault: A love-it-or-hate-it brooch and that tiara Kate wore once. Also, we took a look at another upcoming documentary, Elizabeth at 90 - A Family Tribute. This one will feature what is reportedly Princess Alexandra's first interview! Say no more, I'm IN.

Coming up this week: Queen Máxima's got some tour stuff of her own that needs discussing, plus Denmark and more...

His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck Facebook

--Baby news for Jordan's royal family: Prince Feisal, younger brother of King Abdullah, and his wife Princess Zina welcomed a son on Wednesday. The baby is named Abdullah, and Queen Rania shared a family snapshot. [Instagram]

--Princess Leonore of Sweden turned 2 on February 20, so of course there were some cute new photos released. [Facebook]

--Here you can check out Kinnekskanner, RTL's documentary covering a year in the life of Luxembourg's grand ducal family. There's lovely footage even if you don't understand the language. [RTL]

--King Carl Gustaf is on an official visit to Japan, and Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko hosted a dinner for him at their residence. [Imperial Family of Japan Blog]

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault, we flashed back to an event featuring one of the dresses from Kensington Palace's current fashion exhibit. Don't miss the video and its tales of Princess Margaret's sartorial sauciness. (What was considered saucy in her day, that is. You know.)

Coming up this week: A Swedish check in, and more...

Sunday Tidbits for February 7: Triple the Baby News, and More

It's birthday season and baby season, what a coincidence...

--Baby news #1: Congratulations to the King and Queen of Bhutan! Queen Jetsun Pema gave birth to their first child, a boy, on February 5. The baby is known as His Royal Highness The Gyalsey. [Facebook]
His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck Facebook

--Here's an excellent way to waste some time: The Dutch Royal Collection is now online, allowing you to search through all sorts of paintings and other objets d'art belonging to the various foundations of the House of Orange-Nassau. [Koninklijke Verzamelingen]

--A fairly sedate appearance for Crown Princess Mary this week at Copenhagen Fashion Week, though you can't see her excellent leopard print shoes here. (But you can in this small gallery, where you can also see Countess Alexandra making an appearance.) Mary turned 44 on Friday, so happy birthday to her! [nordjyske.dk]

--Baby news #2: Congrats are also in order in Jordan, for Prince Rashid bin Hassan and his wife, Princess Zeina, who welcomed their second son on February 1. The baby is named Talal. [Petra]

--Luxembourg's grand ducal family has a documentary coming out on February 14 with a behind the scenes look at a year in their lives. Luxarazzi has the trailer.

--Baby news #3: Princess Carolina of Bourbon-Parma and husband Albert Brenninkmeijer released a cute new family photo with their new son, Xavier, born December 16, and daughter Alaïa-Maria.

--If you haven't heard the depressing news yet, Spain has cancelled a planned March state visit to Britain. Per the Spanish Foreign Ministry: "Due to the process of forming a new government currently underway in Spain, the state visit has been postponed." Politicians, always ruining our tiara fun. #priorities [The Local]

--Here's some British sparkle anyway: The Duchess of Cornwall went out this week dripping in diamonds and a possibly dubious dress. [Jewel Vault]

--And finally: Harry, on cuteness duty once again. [Sun]

17 January 2016

Sunday Tidbits for January 17: Elsewhere Around the World...

King Harald's jubilee is most of what's going on in this mid-January slow time, but let's briefly check in with the rest of the world before we return to Norway:

--The Swedish royal family is getting back to work after the holiday. The King, Queen, Crown Princess, and Prince Daniel met with the Foreign Minister to discuss upcoming state visit plans (of general sparkly interest to us all!).
Kungahuset.se

--Queen Rania continued her working visit in Europe. This week, she dropped in on the Norwegian royal family, and met with Queen Mathilde. [Billed-Bladet, Purepeople]

--Crown Princess Mary collected group hugs on an engagement for the Danish Heart Association, where she sported an interesting take on the midi skirt from Alexander McQueen. [ParisMatch]

--The Japanese imperial family's New Year events continued this week, including their annual poetry reading (which also showcases their own form of modern court dress). [Imperial Family of Japan Blog]
NNN video screencaps

--This is terrible: the Earl and Countess of March were attacked and robbed at their home, Goodwood House. Priceless heirlooms were taken included a diamond tiara and an emerald and diamond ring tied to Charles II. [Telegraph]

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault, we parsed the release of the annual lists of official gifts for the British royal family, with fingers crossed for something fabulous.

Coming up this week: the Norwegian jubilee, and a look at their new official photographs...

10 January 2016

Sunday Tidbits for January 10: Birthday News and Jewelry Views

Getting right to it:

--Is it weird that I judge whether or not I'm willing to see a royal movie based on how good the jewelry reproductions look? Because Netflix released a look for its upcoming mega-budget dramatization of the life of Queen Elizabeth II, The Crown, and it seems they paid attention. I did enjoy their wishful thinking, pairing the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara with the necklace from Queen Alexandra's Wedding Parure. That's one I hope we'll see in real life some day (but, of course, hasn't yet happened and wouldn't have happened when this is set, because the necklace was with the Queen Mother). [YouTube]

--Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine turned five, and pictures taken by Crown Princess Mary were released.
HRH The Crown Princess/Kongehuset

--In other birthday news, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg turned 95 and some of his friends from other royal families joined the family for a concert yesterday. [Luxarazzi]

--Queen Mathilde returned to action for a New Year's reception at the palace, among other events this week. It does amuse me that she picked a dress with basically two different halves for an event where she's primarily photographed from one side. Just mirror the layout for the next event, and you don't even have to change clothes. [Twitter]
Belgian Monarchy Twitter

--Lovely reader gavin drew my attention to an interesting tiara belonging to the Countess of Tankerville (here, here, as a necklace here). It is, near as I can tell, identical to Sweden's Modern Fringe Tiara. The Swedish tiara is a relatively new addition to their collection, but its origins before that aren't known. It may have been an antique when acquired. The Wikipedia page for the Earl of Tankerville mentions the estate was broken up after his death. Very interesting indeed. [Lafayette]

--Queen Rania visited Downing Street to show us how to pep up Yet Another Black Coat with some intriguingly deployed cut outs, on this Christopher Kane model. (And, also, to talk about serious stuff.)

--And finally, it's been a big week at the Vault! I tackled the Greville bequest, one of the most intriguing portions of the late Queen Mother's jewelry collection, in two long parts (see here for part 1, and here for part 2). And then I covered one seriously magnificent emerald necklace that's just begging for a reappearance.

--A Nobel tangent of sorts: Princess Madeleine and Chris O'Neill appeared on the talk show Skavlan for an interview, and it's pretty charming. Their segment is below, or you can see the whole show (which also featured Adele and Jamie Oliver) here. The interview is in English. [YouTube, SVT]

--Queen Rania welcomed the German president and his partner to Jordan in a fascinating coat featuring some serious embroidery. I can't tell if I love it, period, or if I just love a break from some of the more boring entries this Royal Coat Season. Either way, I'm digging it. It's from Nafsika Skourti in Jordan.[Instagram]

--A few weeks ago, we discussed we discussed the tiara of Queen Nazli of Egypt and its elaborate matching diamond necklace, which was up for auction. The necklace sold for a mere (ha) $4,282,000. (Sotheby's)

--Hey, here's a close up of that swimming pool of aquamarine Princess Madeleine wore on her finger at the Nobel ceremony, the ring she inherited from Princess Lilian. [Instagram]

--At long last, I have finally covered one of my favorite sets of jewelry in the Duchess of Cornwall's collection: her magnificent pink topaz pearl choker and the matching pink topaz earrings. You know how I feel about the pink gems. [Jewel Vault]

--And finally, no Nobel coverage can be complete without some Bonus Nobel Hair! Just a moment of appreciation, please:
