Sunday Tidbits for July 12: A Coronation and Other Celebrations

Not that many monarchies do actual coronations these days, with a crown and the whole thing. But coincidentally, the two main monarchies in this week's tidbits still do, starting with one that held just such an event last weekend:

--Tonga held the coronation of King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u on July 4, the main event in eleven days of celebrations that drew thousands of people. Tupou VI took the throne in 2012, following the death of his brother. Here's a gallery of the coronation, and here's a news report. [Radio New Zealand, Zimbio, TVNZ]
Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako of Japan were among the international royal guests in attendance, and it was Masako's first trip abroad since attending the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander two years ago. Here's a video focusing on the couple at the coronation and banquet. [YouTube]

--Not royal specifically, but I suspect this might be of interest to some of you: "Death Made Material: The Hair Jewelry of The Brontës." [Longreads]

--Of course, Mario Testino's official portraits for Princess Charlotte's christening were released this week. They are precisely what you would expect from a Mario Testino shoot, really, and the one below is my fave. [Hello]

--Over at the Jewel Vault, we covered several members of the British royal family joining together to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. [Jewel Vault]

--That sweaty piece of fabric, a.k.a. Andy Murray's wrist band, that the Duchess of Cornwall took home from Wimbledon? She put it up for auction, with the proceeds going to a charity selected by Murray. [Express]

--A "mega street party" is in the works for Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday celebrations next year. Your average senior citizen celebration, basically. [Telegraph]

--And finally, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall went to Wales for their annual week of engagements there (they call it - you'll never guess - "Wales Week"), and Cams made a little friend. [Storify]
