Monday Tidbits for August 1: Follow-Ups and Other Stuff

Following up on a couple things we've seen in the past, and also sheep:

--Emperor Akihito may address the Japanese public as early as August 8th about his reported desire to abdicate. The government would have to revise Imperial Household Law in order for an abdication to occur. But whatever statement he may make sounds like it will be said in a typically roundabout way, because he is prohibited from making political remarks or having governmental powers, and therefore the Emperor "is expected to avoid using such words as 'abdication' or referring to legal systems when he expresses his thoughts." [The Asahi Shimbun]

--The Countess of Wessex is looking well, but can we talk about Bubbles the show sheep?!

--Over at the Vault: I mentioned that we'll be taking a closer look at some of the Queen's outfits on display this summer, and we're starting with the outfit that got Her Maj to appear in public with NO BROOCH and a CLUTCH BAG that was NOT BLACK (gasp!).

--Add this to your unlikely who wore it best? file: Melanie Griffith tried out the black version of the Barbara Casasola dress worn a few weeks ago by the Duchess of Cambridge. [Zimbio]

--Remember that stunning Van Cleef & Arpels diamond necklace owned by Queen Nazli? It was up for auction in December last year. Now we know who bought it: Van Cleef & Arpels acquired it for their private collection! This is wonderful news, it needs to be where it will be properly appreciated (and displayed). [Instagram]
