Royal Flashback of the Day: March 7

Fire up the time machine and set it back about 35 years, if you please.

The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the opening of the Barbican Centre on March 4, 1982.
When viewed from today's perspective, this claret taffeta maternity gown made by Bellville Sassoon for Diana's first pregnancy feels overwhelmed by bows and ruffles. It feels like a costume. All this, and yet...I kinda sorta totally love it. (So did the young princess, returning the proposed sketch to the designer with a handwritten "Yes please!" note.) Maybe my love of a red gown, or a square neckline, or - better yet - both is just that strong.

Or maybe it's my undying love for the King Khalid Diamond Necklace, which Diana borrowed from the Queen to pair with diamond and pearl earrings she received as a wedding gift from the Emir of Qatar. This would've been a newer addition to the Queen's collection at the time - she received it on a trip to Saudi Arabia in 1979 - and it still reigns as one of the best gifts she's been given, if you ask me.

Or maybe it's just because I still wish I could live in Colonial Williamsburg. Could be any reason, really.
