Readers’ Favorite Outfits of 2018, Evening: Results, Part 2!

This is it, the last installment of the results from your favorite royal outfits of 2018 and the remainder of your top 10 favorites from the Evening Divison. Drumroll please...

#5. Princess Eugenie at her Wedding Reception in Zac Posen
Alex Bramall/Royal Family
Zac Posen's still dishing out little peeks at this dress on his Instagram, that's how much detail there is to absorb in this creation. Eugenie had a great year and I hope we see more royal looks from this designer in the future.

#4. The Duchess of Cambridge at the Diplomatic Reception in Jenny Packham
Embed from Getty Images
Kate's sparkly and floaty Jenny Packhams are all starting to run together for me, if I'm being honest. Not for many of you, though! Her last tiara offering for the year won her a spot in your top 5.

#3. Crown Princess Mary at the New Year’s Gala Banquet in Soeren Le Schmidt
Kongehuset
Mary got all three of her entries in this category into the top 10! I do believe that's a record. She captured #8, #6, and #3 - a reminder of the greatness she brings to the New Year's Gala.

#2. Queen Mathilde at the French State Banquet in Armani Privé
Elysee
It was a good year for royal Armani Privé, no? I couldn't agree with this pick more and landing both of her possible entries in the top 10 is a great result for Mathilde.

#1. Queen Máxima at the British/Dutch State Banquet in Jan Taminiau
Embed from Getty Images
Máxima and her main man Jan didn't just take the top spot, they absolutely ran away with it. Maybe it was the dress, maybe it was THE JEWELS, maybe it was the fact that it all went down at one of the year's most anticipated royal events - whatever the combination, this one wasn't even close. Máxima is by far your favorite evening look of 2018.

That's a wrap on the best of 2018! Thanks to everyone who played along. (And a reminder for those who will inevitably take the absence of their own favorites a bit too personally: this is just for fun. Lowest possible stakes here, friends.)

Readers’ Favorite Outfits of 2018, Day/Cocktail: Results, Part 2!

Yesterday, we counted down the first five from your top 10 favorite royal Day/Cocktail outfits. Now we move right along to your final five…

#5. Queen Máxima at the Appeltjes van Oranje Awards in Natan
Embed from Getty Images
Máxima’s worn this dress in a few ways. This year’s cocktail-style appearance with a big ol’ brooch and some good hair thrown in landed the #5 spot on your list.

#4. The Duchess of Cambridge at Kensington Palace in Emilia Wickstead
Kensington Palace
A little bit of tartan, some snow machine action, and a well fit cardigan grabbed Kate a spot on your countdown.

#3. Beatrice Borromeo at Monaco’s National Day in Armani Privé
Embed from Getty Images
Chocolate velvet accents and a bit of couture made for one of the chicest winter hat outfits I’ve seen, and secured a princely spot on your countdown for Beatrice.

#2. The Duchess of Sussex in Australia in Oscar de la Renta
Embed from Getty Images
The comments were full of quibbles but none of that could stop Meghan’s fairy tale moment from swooping in as your second favorite of 2018.

#1. The Duchess of Cambridge at the V&A in Erdem

Whether you loved it for the swish or the fabric or the accessories or any other reason you please, the results are clear: Kate takes home the grand prize in your Day/Cocktail Division!

Did your picks make the cut?

Readers’ Favorite Outfits of 2018, Day/Cocktail: Results, Part 1!

You placed your votes for your favorite royal outfits for 2018 – Day/Cocktail and Evening Divisions – and now it’s time to count down the results!

Starting with the Day/Cocktail Division, your top 10 favorites are:

#10. The Duchess of Sussex at the Sentebale Polo Cup in Carolina Herrera
Embed from Getty Images
I think I forgot about this one entirely myself, but I’m glad many of you mentioned it. Set off by perfectly selected accessories, this denim dress is a little dose of Carolina Herrera magic.

#9. Princess Madeleine at Princess Adrienne’s Christening in Giambattista Valli
Erika Gerdemark, Kungahuset.se
The Swedish christenings have been such a reliable source of some of the best outfits in recent years. Princess Madeleine continues that tradition this year, with her floral dress and headdress accented by her debut of pieces from the Cameo Parure.

#8. Queen Mathilde at the French State Visit in Natan
Belgian Monarchy
A little bit of cape action and a dash of contrasting accessories are just the things to elevate a plain gray outfit to something worthy of a spot on your 2018 favorites list.

#7. Crown Princess Mary in Seattle in Preen
Preen/Danish Ambassador
Sometimes a little bit of black and white is all you need. It’s certainly all Mary needed to display the midi-length trend at its best and land herself a spot on your top 10.

#6. Lady Sarah Chatto at Princess Eugenie and Jack’s Wedding in Jasper Conran
Embed from Getty Images
Lady Sarah expanded her trademark streamlined aesthetic in a pastel direction for the second British royal wedding of the year, and the effect is a top 10-worthy personal best.

Stay tuned for the top 5 in Part 2!

Royal Christmas of the Day: The Windsors at Sandringham

Yesterday's Christmas church stroll by the British royal family was pretty sartorially predictable. Predictably! Maybe the most surprising outfit was the Queen's, but she gets her own post at the Jewel Vault (click here). As for the rest of this lot...

Embed from Getty Images
No one that has been paying any attention will be the least bit surprised to see that the Duchess of Cambridge has ordered up another color of a favorite outfit (a Catherine Walker coat, owned also in green, with another Jane Taylor headband, and worn with her oak leaf brooch). Likewise, no one that has been paying any attention will be the least bit surprised to see that the Duchess of Sussex has ordered up another navy outfit (Victoria Beckham this time). Per usual x2.

Deep colors were also the name of the game for Autumn Phillips and Princess Beatrice, both sporting Claire Mischevani, and Princess Eugenie in festive red. I'd tweak all three of these looks just a littttttttle bit, although I am prepared to offer up my applause to Beatrice for throwing a hat brim into the family mix.

Embed from Getty Images
On the lighter side, have some refreshing bright blues courtesy of the Countess of Wessex (in Suzannah) and the Princess Royal. Is Sophie my fave this year? Maybe. Just maybe.

And finally, bless Zara Tindall for bringing some cheer into my Christmas review by flying the flag for the Purple Is A Neutral club. Every little bit helps our cause.

Year in Review: 2018's Honorable Mentions

Did you fall in love with a 2018 royal outfit from someone not yet featured? Here, my friends, is the place to proclaim your love. The honorable mentions begin...

...right after this programming note: Our next post will be the Christmas round up, probably on the 26th, and then you'll want to stay tuned to cast your votes for your 2018 favorites!

Princess Eugenie in Zac Posen at her Wedding Reception
Alex Bramall/Royal Family
Our one limited glimpse of this gown in action is all I need to call it one of the most interesting - and intricately made - dresses of this royal year.

Princess Beatrice in Ralph & Russo at Princess Eugenie's Wedding
MOD Crown copyright 2018
Satisfying my need for more royal Ralph & Russo, this was a stunning turn for Princess Beatrice. Another contender for the year's best was her faux bow Gucci dress.

Lady Sarah Chatto in Jasper Conran at Princess Eugenie's Wedding

Eugenie's wedding offered a few bests for the year. Sarah broke from her usual color schemes in a big way, to delightful effect. Another nod from the event goes to Lady Gabriella Windsor, who combined her blues in a fun way.

Princess Charlene in Oscar de la Renta at the Ocean Gala
Embed from Getty Images
What, like a sparkly caped thing wasn't making this list?

Princess Sofia in Zetterberg Couture at the Nobel Prize Ceremony
Kungahuset/SVT
This high-impact gown won my heart at the Nobels. Sofia also impressed earlier in the year with her green halter top dress at the Polar Music Prize.

Princess Madeleine in Giambattista Valli at Princess Adrienne's Christening
Erika Gerdemark, Kungahuset.se
Did this floral really win me over, or was it just the fact that Madeleine wore pieces of the Cameo parure for the first time? Probably the latter, but hey, whatever makes it memorable.

Charlotte Casiraghi in Saint Laurent at the Rose Ball
Embed from Getty Images
Listen, I just love the fact that what was arguably the most fun evening ensemble of the year came from Charlotte. Feathers for everybody!

Beatrice Borromeo at...a Bunch of Events
Embed from Getty Images
I think I loved everything we covered Beatrice wedding this year, which is some kind of record: black velvet maternity from Alberta Ferretti at the Rose Ball, fur and fringe at the Ocean Gala, the delicious Armani Privé ensemble above from National Day, and the liquid gold number she wore to the National Day gala.

Year in Review: The Duchess of Cambridge and Crown Princess Victoria's 2018 Bests

Our next two ladies in the spotlight ended up on opposite ends of the spectrum for my personal 2018 favorites.

The Duchess of Cambridge in Erdem at the V&A
Embed from Getty Images
For my end of the year favorites, I usually draw heavily from the year's tiara appearances - but weirdly enough, my top Kate outfits for the year stayed on the less formal side of things. The accessory interest on this Erdem tops my list.

Runners up:

Crown Princess Victoria in Nina Ricci at the Nobel Prize Awards Ceremony
    Embed from Getty Images
Victoria, on the other hand, ended up with a list completely taken from the year's tiara appearances. It was a bit of a three-way tie, but I'm giving top prize to the go big or go home spirit of her foray into Queen Silvia's closet for the Nobel ceremony.

What were your favorite 2018 outfits from Kate and Victoria?

Year in Review: Queen Mathilde, Queen Letizia, and the Duchess of Sussex's 2018 Bests

We did a little Readers' Favorite Outfits vote(s) last year and we're planning on doing it again this year! This week, I'm picking my personal best outfits of the royal year for some of our regulars, plus others. I take your faves into consideration when deciding what we'll vote on, too, so make sure you comment with your personal favorite outfits on the appropriate post!

My picks for the best outfits of the year begin with the Ladies in Velvet.

Queen Mathilde in Armani Privé at the French State Banquet
    Embed from Getty Images
I called it when this event happened and I'm sticking to my guns: nothing else even comes close to topping my list of Mathilde's best outfits of 2018. That color! That shape! That fabric! *chef's kiss*

    Runners up:

Queen Letizia in Felipe Varela at the Chinese State Banquet
    House of HM the King
This is a 2017 repeat but it really shines for me in 2018. It's sleek, luxurious, and the perfect modern way to showcase some of Spain's biggest gems.

    Runners up:

The Duchess of Sussex in Givenchy at the British Fashion Awards
    Embed from Getty Images
I honestly didn't know what I was going to pick for our newest regular in her first full royal year - until THIS happened. Wouldn't have objected to a dangly earring here, but otherwise: SOLD.

    Runner up:

What were your favorite outfits from 2018 for these three women?

Monday Tidbits for December 17: Holiday Cheer and Poll Results

More 2018 wrap up fun awaits us, but first, the results from last week's two polls and some of the usual holiday cheer:

--In the vote for your favorite 2018 tiara surprise, who rose to the top but the one and only Queen Máxima and her use of the Stuart Tiara! Máxima took home 47% of your votes, easily holding off your runner up with 34%, Princess Eugenie and the debut of the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara. Another big British tiara moment, the Duchess of Sussex in Queen Mary's Diamond Bandeau Tiara, took third place with 10% of your votes.

--Princess Eugenie missed her chance to take the tiara prize, but the love for her wedding look carried her to victory as your favorite 2018 royal wedding gown! Eugenie and her Peter Pilotto gown grabbed 49% of your votes. Meghan followed her with 31% of the tally, while Alessandra took 14% and Ayako nabbed the remaining 6%.
    Alex Bramall/Princess Eugenie Instagram

--The usual parade of royal Christmas cards is in full swing! The Windsors contributed with the release of cards from Chaz and Cams, the Cambridge fam, and the Sussex pair.
Taken by Hugo Burnand in the gardens at Clarence House over the summer.
Taken by Matt Porteous at Amner Hall.
Taken by Chris Allerton during their Frogmore House wedding reception.

--Over in Denmark, Queen Margrethe and the crown princely family held a Christmas event at Christiansborg Palace. The Queen's little elves are still finding family treasures around the palace on the family's Instagram, including a pair of Prince Henrik's monogrammed shoes. [Instagram]
    Keld Navntoft, Kongehuset

--And in Sweden, the royal court shared a picture taken by Crown Princess Victoria of Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar celebrating St. Lucia Day last week.
HRH The Crown Princess/Royal Court, Sweden

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault: a little holiday party fun for Her Maj, plus a vibrant pink outfit.

Coming up this week: We continue finishing up 2018 with plenty of outfit favorites. Get your memories rolling and your suggestions ready.

Year in Review: 2018's Royal Wedding Gowns

2018 loaded us up on royal wedding gowns, with two big headliners from Britain and others beyond. It's all leading to the inevitable year-end question: which one was your favorite?

    Embed from Getty Images
Alessandra de Osma wore an embellished gown from Jorge Vázquez to marry Prince Christian of Hanover in Peru in March. I think it's fair to say she claimed the title of Biggest Wedding Tiara of the Year by topping her look with the Hanover Floral Tiara.

    Alexi Lubomirski/Royal Family
Meghan Markle turned to Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy for her May wedding to Prince Harry. She took home the Longest Wedding Veil of the (Royal) Year prize with her Commonwealth floral-embroidered veil anchored with Queen Mary's Diamond Bandeau Tiara.

    Alex Bramall/Royal Family
Princess Eugenie made a touching statement at her October wedding to Jack Brooksbank by asking Peter Pilotto to make her a veil-free gown that showcased the scoliosis surgery scar on her back. She grabbed the Most Colorful Wedding Tiara of the Year award by becoming the first (known) member of the royal family to wear the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara.

    NHK
Princess Ayako claimed the Most Colorful Wedding Ensemble title with her array of traditional looks for her October wedding to Kei Moriya. Pictured is just one of her looks - and she even managed to squeeze in one final tiara appearance.

This isn't all of 2018's wedding treasures, mind you; we covered a couple more in Tidbits mentions and there were a bunch of noble weddings we didn't cover. We've got enough here to pose the question, though:

Which royal wedding gown of 2018 was your favorite?
    Vote in the poll below!

Year in Review: 2018’s Tiara Happenings

Yes, it’s time to begin wrapping up 2018. We’ll start with a round up of this year’s tiara happenings. It’s been an eventful year in diadems! There were quite a few developments beyond the royal tiaras we saw worn this year; tiaras were sold (Queen Alexandrine's Russian Sapphire Tiara, the whole Bourbon-Parma auction, and more), tiaras went on display (the trio of Fife tiaras at Kensington Palace!), and unfortunately, certain things also disappeared (shame on you, thieves of Swedish royal regalia and the Portland Tiara).

This year also gave us plenty of opportunities to see tiaras in action, from a big tiara’d up royal gathering (that marvelous festival of fringes at Frederik’s 50th birthday party) to wedding tiara surprises and more. You can scroll back through alllllll the tiara appearances we covered in 2018 here.

And those events produced some notable tiara happenings…

    The Reappearances
    Embed from Getty Images
Any 2018 tiara round up has to start with the reappearance of the Stuart Tiara, right?! Some of us have been waiting patiently (or not so patiently) for Queen Máxima to resurrect the biggest of all the Dutch big guns, unseen since Queen Juliana’s reign. She delivered twice: debuting a smaller version in Luxembourg and the whole monster in the United Kingdom.

    BBC/ITV
Weddings brought even more reappearances – and, in the case of the British royal family, confirmation that two mysterious tiaras do indeed still exist in the vault: the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara (worn by Princess Eugenie) and Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau Tiara (worn by the Duchess of Sussex). Slightly outside of the royal realm, another wedding also gave us an opportunity to see the Spencer Tiara in action once again.

    A New Tiara
    DR1
Princess Marie’s tiara access finally increased in 2018, with the addition of the Nuits Claires Tiara courtesy of an arrangement with Mauboussin. It’s a rare treat to see a newly made tiara in action.

    The Debuts
    House of HM the King
Queen Letizia headlined last year’s tiara happenings by wearing the Fleur de Lys Tiara for the first time. She followed that up in short order by debuting the two other largest tiaras in the Spanish collection: the Cartier Diamond and Pearl Tiara and Queen Maria Christina’s Cartier Loop Tiara. Elsewhere, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie continued her run through the Luxembourg vaults by debuting the Chaumet Diamond and Pearl Choker Tiara.

Tuesday Tidbits for December 11: Trips and Trees and Tiaras Galore

First things first, if you missed out on any of the Nobel fun yesterday, click thyself back and enjoy! More tiara fun awaits us this week, after these quick tidbits:

--Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary made an official visit to Latvia to celebrate the country's 100th anniversary of independence. The trip involved baby blue shoes in a snowy wonderland and this princess-proper arrival outfit, which I would enjoy twice as much without all the bobbly thingys (technical term). [Paris Match]
    Kongehuset

--Meanwhile, Queen Margrethe ran into the Duchess of Gloucester at a gala dinner for the Danish-UK Association in London. The Duchess is Danish herself, born in Odense. [Instagram]

--The Duchess of Cornwall completed one of her very best annual engagements last week, inviting children with life-limiting conditions to help decorate the Clarence House Christmas tree. This year, a fun addition: reindeer! [Town & Country]
    Clarence House

--Over at the Jewel Vault: Flame Lily Alert!

--I expect we'll be talking about this one next week because the time approaches to round up our 2018 bests, but for those that can't wait: The Duchess of Sussex made a surprise appearance to present Clare Waight Keller with the British Designer of the Year Womenswear award last night. [Vogue]

--And finally, a seasonal requirement: Christmas trees at Buckingham Palace, set to (what else) the Nutcracker.

Coming up this week: First we will have MORE TIARAS, from the Netherlands and also night 2 of Nobel glitter. Then it's time to start wrapping up the year with our traditional Best Of reviews!

Royal Outfits of the Day: Festive Skirts with Mary and Kate

'Tis the season for tartans and tweeds.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted a party for families of military personnel deployed in Cyprus this week.
    Kensington Palace
'Tis especially the season for red skirt versions and 'tis the trend to make them midi length.

Emilia Wickstead skirt, worn with a Brora cardigan
Pair them with a cashmere cardi and some boots for a little casual Christmas party fun...

Crown Princess Mary marked the UN's International Day Of Persons With Disabilities this week.
Or dress them up with a belted blazer and pumps...

Any way you want to do it, it's festive perfection. Well played to them both.

Breaking Jewel Sightings: The Windsors at the Diplomatic Reception

Well, well, well. It's been quite a number of years since a decent number of photographs were allowed from inside the annual Buckingham Palace Diplomatic Reception. This year I guess they decided to give us a holiday treat! I'm surprised enough I decided we'd do it breaking news-style here.

    Embed from Getty Images
Swanky gold adorned the Queen's usual white uniform tonight - actually a really good version of her typical evening gown. Diamonds joined the party in spades. And you can even get a peek at some bling for the men, there; this is the event of the year where the royal men wear the actual Garter from the Order of the Garter on the leg. (Click the names of all the pieces listed here for more info where available.)

    Diamond Bracelet
    Evening Watch

The Duchess of Cornwall also stuck with white, which has become her typical evening uniform of late. This one's an oft-repeated Bruce Oldfield ensemble. She did bring us something new on the jewel front, though: massive pearl and diamond earrings! The pearls are the size and shape of Queen Victoria's Pearl Drop Earrings, although the top portion appears slightly different. Innnnnnteresting.

A new and unmistakably Jenny Packham dress for the Duchess of Cambridge tonight. Bit of a fairy princess flair, no? She paired it with what has swiftly become her go-to tiara and earrings combo.

Collingwood Pearl and Diamond Earrings (from the collection of Diana, Princess of Wales)
Queen Mary's Diamond Bar Choker Bracelet

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not attend. They were at another event this evening. (Hard to say if they'll attend this event in the future. I've seen people claim it's restricted to just these attendees - the Queen and previously Prince Philip with Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate, but that's not actually true. Other family members attended in the past and they've just used this line up for the past few years. Time will tell.)

Monday Tidbits for December 3: Journeys for Princesses and Elves

    Here we go:

--Tiara sale update: Queen Alexandrine's Russian Sapphire Tiara sold at the top of its estimate: 2,000,000 DKK, or just over $300,000. The sale was held on November 30. [Bruun Rasmussen]
    Queen Alexandrine's Russian Sapphire Tiara
    Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers

--The Danish royal family is doing another advent calendar-style series on their Instagram page this December! They introduced the series with a video of Queen Margrethe hiding some rice pudding in the palace attic for the palace elves (nisse, crafted by the Queen herself) to find. The palace treasures these little creatures find as they hunt for the porridge are items chock full of family history, and they're being posted on the royal Instagram each day. [Instagram, Wikipedia]

--Meanwhile, Crown Princess Mary embarked on a real journey to Kenya. Some of her own photos and stories from the trip can also be found on the Danish royal family's Instagram. [ParisMatch, Instagram]

--The Princess Royal, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and Anne's sharp suit went on an official visit to Chile. [Instagram]
    Royal Family

--And finally, over at the Jewel Vault, a new portrait for the Queen.

Coming up this week: We may have some tiaras in cars because the Buckingham Palace Diplomatic Reception is this week. Maybe also a Spain check in, and other stuff too...

Tuesday Tidbits for November 27: Thieves! (And a Jordan Update)

    Oh dear:

--The Portland Tiara was stolen last week. Thieves broke into the Portland Collection Gallery at the Welbeck Estate, smashed the armored display case, and made off with the valuable and historically important Cartier tiara, plus a diamond brooch. The brooch was created from diamond clusters that were once a part of the tiara. We covered the tiara's story a couple years ago, when it went on display to the public along with a rotating selection of treasures from the collection of the Dukes of Portland at their country estate. Horrendous news. [Nottingham Post]

--Over at the Jewel Vault, the Queen flipped things around for a change.

--What has Queen Rania been up to? Patterns, that's what. First, a cozy coat for a proud mom moment watching Princess Salma's Commissioning Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

--And second, a really fun Andrew GN number as she and King Abdullah visited Japan. [Twitter]

Coming up this week: Covering our M bases, I guess, with Máxima, Mathilde, and Mary. Also, a state visit from China to Spain.
