Royal Outfits of the Day: Day Formal with Mary and Letizia

The year's first fancy events rolled on last week in Denmark and over the weekend in Spain. These all involve what I call a modern sort of court dress for the royal women: formal outfits with long skirts for day events. It's something that used to be more common in the royal world, but is now limited to a few events in a few countries.

In Denmark, Queen Margrethe and the crown princely couple hold two days of New Year's Court receptions. They greet specific groups at each event.

Crown Princess Mary is fond of repeats for these events and many of those repeats have been redone over the years. This year featured a pair of remixed repeats.

Embed from Getty Images
First up was an old Heartmade outfit that's had many appearances at the New Year's Courts over the years. In 2017, she ditched the original jacket and had a new top put on the outfit. I'm still hoping we'll see that jacket again. (Queen Margrethe, by the way, is tremendously fond of repeats for these events; she wears this blue outfit for both days and has done so for many years.)

Kongehuset
On the second day, Mary wore the dress she wore to attend the evening New Year banquet back in 2006, which was her first time attending. The Henrik Hviid dress turned up again in 2012 with its long train chopped off to serve as an option for the day events. Not my favorite, but she did give us some of the Danish Ruby Parure we were missing at this year's gala, with the brooch at her neck and the stud earrings.

In Spain, the King and Queen attended Pascua Militar, a military ceremony and their first formal event of the new year.

Embed from Getty Images
Even I - with my well-documented love of a winter velvet outfit - must admit that this Felipe Varela version is a bit of a snooze. Okay, it's a total snooze, unless you choose to look at it as nothing but a backdrop for some brooch action.

House of HM the King
That's a brooch, alright. This one is from the joyas de pasar, the Spanish royal jewels passed from queen to queen, and it is a debut for the Queen. (She wore a different pearl brooch with a pendant for National Day in 2017. Both are a common style found in multiple royal collections, including the Cambridge Pearl Pendant Brooch in Britain.)

Embed from Getty Images
It's interesting that when she adds a brooch - a jewel some might consider old fashioned today - she goes with outfits that feel like classic royal standards. That National Day outfit I linked above gave me strong flashbacks to a young Queen Elizabeth II; now we've got a brooch on a bouclé jacket, which is about as classic as it comes. I'd be interested to see her to put more of a modern Letizia spin on it, if ya know what I mean?

Year in Review: Queen Mathilde, Queen Letizia, and the Duchess of Sussex's 2018 Bests

We did a little Readers' Favorite Outfits vote(s) last year and we're planning on doing it again this year! This week, I'm picking my personal best outfits of the royal year for some of our regulars, plus others. I take your faves into consideration when deciding what we'll vote on, too, so make sure you comment with your personal favorite outfits on the appropriate post!

My picks for the best outfits of the year begin with the Ladies in Velvet.

I called it when this event happened and I'm sticking to my guns: nothing else even comes close to topping my list of Mathilde's best outfits of 2018. That color! That shape! That fabric! *chef's kiss*

Runners up:

Queen Letizia in Felipe Varela at the Chinese State Banquet
House of HM the King
This is a 2017 repeat but it really shines for me in 2018. It's sleek, luxurious, and the perfect modern way to showcase some of Spain's biggest gems.

Runners up:

The Duchess of Sussex in Givenchy at the British Fashion Awards

I honestly didn't know what I was going to pick for our newest regular in her first full royal year - until THIS happened. Wouldn't have objected to a dangly earring here, but otherwise: SOLD.

What were your favorite outfits from 2018 for these three women?

Year in Review: 2018’s Tiara Happenings

Yes, it’s time to begin wrapping up 2018. We’ll start with a round up of this year’s tiara happenings. It’s been an eventful year in diadems! There were quite a few developments beyond the royal tiaras we saw worn this year; tiaras were sold (Queen Alexandrine's Russian Sapphire Tiara, the whole Bourbon-Parma auction, and more), tiaras went on display (the trio of Fife tiaras at Kensington Palace!), and unfortunately, certain things also disappeared (shame on you, thieves of Swedish royal regalia and the Portland Tiara).

This year also gave us plenty of opportunities to see tiaras in action, from a big tiara’d up royal gathering (that marvelous festival of fringes at Frederik’s 50th birthday party) to wedding tiara surprises and more. You can scroll back through alllllll the tiara appearances we covered in 2018 here.

And those events produced some notable tiara happenings…

The Reappearances
Embed from Getty Images
Any 2018 tiara round up has to start with the reappearance of the Stuart Tiara, right?! Some of us have been waiting patiently (or not so patiently) for Queen Máxima to resurrect the biggest of all the Dutch big guns, unseen since Queen Juliana’s reign. She delivered twice: debuting a smaller version in Luxembourg and the whole monster in the United Kingdom.

BBC/ITV
Weddings brought even more reappearances – and, in the case of the British royal family, confirmation that two mysterious tiaras do indeed still exist in the vault: the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara (worn by Princess Eugenie) and Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau Tiara (worn by the Duchess of Sussex). Slightly outside of the royal realm, another wedding also gave us an opportunity to see the Spencer Tiara in action once again.

A New Tiara
DR1
Princess Marie’s tiara access finally increased in 2018, with the addition of the Nuits Claires Tiara courtesy of an arrangement with Mauboussin. It’s a rare treat to see a newly made tiara in action.

The Debuts
House of HM the King
Queen Letizia headlined last year’s tiara happenings by wearing the Fleur de Lys Tiara for the first time. She followed that up in short order by debuting the two other largest tiaras in the Spanish collection: the Cartier Diamond and Pearl Tiara and Queen Maria Christina’s Cartier Loop Tiara. Elsewhere, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie continued her run through the Luxembourg vaults by debuting the Chaumet Diamond and Pearl Choker Tiara.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Letizia at the Spanish Constitution Anniversary

The Spanish royal family marked the 40th anniversary
of the Spanish Constitution yesterday.
House of HM the King

Special event? Must need a dash of red. Such seems to be the thinking of Queen Letizia these days, and can we really argue with her?

House of HM the King

This is the third time we've seen this Carolina Herrera dress so far, I believe, after its debut at another special event: the family's trip to Asturias in September. She bumped up the special occasion-ness (that's a thing, go with it) this time with a bigger pair of ruby and diamond earrings. (Can we really argue with that either? I think not.)

The King and Queen attended a concert for the anniversary the previous evening.
House of HM the King

For a concert the evening before, Letizia went for some fake out va-va-voom in the form of a lined lace plunge. I'm not averse to the faux plunge. I'm just averse to the way the lace looks like an afterthought and to...sort of the whole rest of the top. A shame! Some swishy magic could have happened here.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Queen Letizia's Recents

If you're going to double up on any style, you might as well make it the swishy, belted style:

Queen Letizia marked the 40th anniversary of the Public State Employment Service last week.

Can the simple fact that a coat is from Carolina Herrera save it from blerghdom? This repeated beige number votes yes.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia opened an exhibit at the Reina Sofia Museum yesterday.
Embed from Getty Images
This gray number would be equally at home in Queen Mathilde's closet, no? Maybe even more at home, in fact - but a little flip with the belt gives it a little Letizia flair. Two for two in swishy, belted successes.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Letizia and Mathilde

Just a couple of queens, going about their queenly business.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia started a state visit to Peru yesterday.
House of HM the King
Unfortunately for Letizia, that queenly business isn't quite as glam on this state visit as it would be back home; they didn't have a big fancy state banquet. (And when I say unfortunately for Letizia, I mean unfortunately for us.) Letizia has a new Carolina Herrera dress and it is fine. Stripes! What's not to like?

The King and Queen attended the Valencian Economy Night last week.
Embed from Getty Images
I'll get some jewels in here somehow, don't you worry. Letizia's black diamond earrings and the bracelets from the joyas de pasar spiced up her repeated Hugo Boss jumpsuit at this previous event. That's how you do it.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde commemorated the centenary of the armistice with events including a special Last Post ceremony and a concert with the Canadian Governor General as a guest.
Belgian Monarchy

Queen Mathilde's always going to look sharp when she needs to, she's got this down pat. Her green concert outfit is a repeat, but I'm here for any time she wants to throw in some accent accessories. The blush pink shoes and bag make the look for me.

Tuesday Tidbits for November 6: Birthdays and Families and More

Here we go:

--There's an interesting profile of the Prince of Wales in Vanity Fair for his 70th birthday. Maybe more interesting in terms of the Duchess of Cornwall, but a good read and some nice new portraits of the couple from the photographer that shot Harry and Meghan's engagement and wedding photos. [Vanity Fair]

--Speaking of Cams: Over at the Jewel Vault, she brought along a very sparkly new debut jewel for the couple's ongoing tour of West Africa.

--Couple of family events in Spain recently. First, the Princess of Asturias delivered her first public speech, reading a portion of Spain's constitution at an event marking its 40th anniversary. Leonor is 13, the same age her father was when he read his first speech. She did wonderfully well and had lots of support from her proud family, of course. [Hello]

--Second, Queen Sofia celebrated her 80th birthday with a concert and a family lunch. The group photo from the lunch released by the royal household is notable because it includes Infanta Cristina. Cristina has been mainly kept out of stuff like this due to an ongoing corruption scandal, for which her husband is currently serving a jail term.
House of HM the King

--And finally, a museum alert for you: Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams comes to the V&A in London on February 2. You can check out Princess Margaret's famous Dior birthday dress, among other splendors. [Harper's Bazaar]

Tidbits is your spot for royal topics we haven't covered separately on the blog, all week long. Please mind the comment policy, and enjoy!

Royal Outfits of the Day: Letizia Also Brought the Jewels

While we were busy in tiaraland, Queen Letizia threw out a notable jewel appearance of her own.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia welcomed the President of Germany to Spain last week.
Embed from Getty Images
This strand of large pearls with a big diamond clasp is another piece from the joyas de pasar; the Russian set of pearls was given by Alfonso XII to his bride, Maria de las Mercedes of Orléans, as a wedding present in 1878. Queen Letizia paired the historic pearls with an outfit from Hugo Boss. (Boss, in addition to being one of Letizia's regulars, is a German company, so a bit of a nod to the guests.)

House of HM the King
Huzzah for Letizia with the big time jewels and all. It's just that I don't really think this works for her. Nothing against a strand of pearls, but this ensemble is a stuffy combination. Doesn't feel very...Letizia.

The King and Queen also attended the Francisco Cerecedo Journalism Awards.
Embed from Getty Images
We need to close out with something back on the sleeker side, like so. This is night and day in every way from the German event above. Note the white heel on the shoes to coordinate with the black and white Carolina Herrera dress, a great styling choice.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Letizia at the Princess of Asturias Awards

For Queen Letizia's dress at year's Princess of Asturias Awards, Felipe Varela took last year's theme of intricate embroidery and turned it up to 11.

King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and Queen Sofia attended the Princess of Asturias Awards on Friday.
House of HM the King
Letizia wore a brocade patchwork midi length dress featuring hand embroidery completed in thread with crystal and metal, using shades of dark blue, cerulean, slate, and nude.

House of HM the King
It almost has the look of embellished boiled leather, a dress of armor to give the fanciest costumes from Game of Thrones a run for their money. (It is not, however, a terribly stiff thing. You can see it in movement here; the skirt sways nicely.)

Embed from Getty Images
There's not a single simple thing about this. Not even the hair, which is deceptively more complicated than a plain tucked behind the ears look; not even the earrings, nicely loaded with history as part of the joyas de pasar. One thing's undeniable, though: this is ART. Hundreds of hours of hand embroidery! She's wearing a museum piece.

Letizia also usually wears Varela to the concert that's held before the awards. She broke with that tradition this year, opting for an Emporio Armani dress.
House of HM the King
It is black; it has a ruffle; it will not be remembered. (By me.) No matter, though.

Embed from Getty Images
Because when you're rocking not only the big earrings from the joyas de pasar but the twin diamond bracelets, I'm not going to focus on much else anyway.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Letizia and National Day

While we were tending to royal wedding business, the Spanish royal family was out and about for National Day. Queen Letizia left the color to her daughters, including the Princess of Asturias, who was wearing the brooch of the Order of the Golden Fleece she received earlier this year.

House of HM the King
Letizia remains exclusive to Felipe Varela for this annual event, and this offers exactly what you expect from Varela in terms of excellent fit and construction. It doesn't come without its quibbles, though; I'm not loving the length and froof of the skirt mixed with the structure of the jacket, plus this is one of those colors of blergh that kind of actively sucks up all the color around it. Not a bright outfit, not a bright day. (On multiple fronts, since the King and Queen ended the day visiting flooded areas in Mallorca.)

Embed from Getty Images
But my outfit quibbles were much reduced once Letizia headed inside the palace for the reception, ditching the coat and allowing the delicate Chantilly lace skirt to be its best ballerina self.

House of HM the King
Color has already made its return - Letizia's best color, in fact. She visited Rome for World Food Day, repeating the Carolina Herrera dress she wore in Asturias last month. Definitely worthy of a speedy rewear. That said, this might be the first time I'm actively distracted by her Steve Madden heels with transparent straps. Man, I hate that I sorta want to advocate for a plainer nude shoe.

Royal Outfit of the Day: Letizia's Jumpsuit with a Superhero Spin

The King and Queen of Spain attended the opening of the Royal Theater's new season, the opera "Fausto", last night
House of HM the King
'Tis no gown, this ensemble for a night at the theater. 'Tis a jumpsuit! A jumpsuit with a CAPE!

House of HM the King
Sticking a cape on something is one of of the fastest ways to my heart. Get your superhero on at all times, that's my policy. That said, I do think this basic idea has been done a touch better in the past:

Embed from Getty Images
Queen Letizia's jumpsuit immediately called to mind one of my favorite Oscar after party outfits of the past few years, Diane Kruger in a red caped jumpsuit by Donna Karan in 2015. I would steal just one thing from this for Letizia's navy look (which is by Pedro del Hierro): the cropped slim-fit pant.

Embed from Getty Images
The longer pants on Letizia's version can almost trick you into thinking this was a gown. Only an issue here because a gown would be overkill for this particular event, where others are in business suits, shorter dresses, and the like. The rest of this, I'm all on board.

Tiara Thursday: The Countess of Villagonzalo's Meander Tiara

We've covered tiaras that can be necklaces, tiaras that can be brooches, and tiaras that can be reduced in size...but a tiara that's actually two tiaras stacked on top of each other might be a new one for our Thursday spotlight. It's a double decker diadem!

The Countess of Villagonzalo's Meander Tiara
Bonhams
Spanish jeweler Ansorena crafted this tiara around 1900, just around the time that jewelers were beginning to master the use of platinum. The lightness and strength of the metal allowed for a delicate and intricate Belle Époque design. (Interestingly, Ansorena's archives note the tiara was conceived as early as 1890, just ahead of the rise of platinum.) The tiara includes approximately 33.5 carats of old brilliant, single, and rose-cut diamonds. The construction features millegrain detailing and knifewire tracery.

Top portion of the tiara
Bonhams
Together, the whole diadem is a lot of look - but it separates into two pieces, both of which can be worn on their own as tiaras. The top tiara has a band of meandering Greek key motifs in the center; forget-me-not flowers and trailing laurel leaves representing true love and the triumph of love fill out the rest of the piece.

Bottom portion of the tiara, as a tiara and as a necklace
Bonhams
The bottom tiara can be removed from its frame and worn as a choker necklace. It features a lacework lattice design with a central handkerchief motif.

Esperanza Chávarri Aldecoa, the Countess of Villagonzalo, wearing the tiara in the fashionable low style circa 1920, with an additional diamond tassel at the center
Christie's
Although not owned by a royal family, this diadem would have seen plenty of royal events courtesy of its owner, Esperanza Chávarri Aldecoa, the Countess of Villagonzalo (1893-1982). The Countess was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria Eugenia, wife of King Alfonso XIII of Spain. Victoria Eugenia was another Ansorena patron; the jewelers created the Fleur de Lys Tiara among other Spanish royal jewels. (And they're still doing so, with the Ansorena Princess Fleur de Lys Tiara as an example.)

The Countess of Villagonzalo's diamond necklace
Christie's
The Countess' tiara passed down through her family over the years, and is now headed for the auction block. It will be sold at Bonhams London on September 26th. The pre-sale estimate is $100,000 - $160,000. It's not the only Villagonzalo jewel to hit the market this year: Christie's sold a diamond collet necklace - pictured above and worn by the Countess in the portrait above - for around $370,000 in June. A similar necklace was owned by Queen Victoria Eugenia and it is a part of the joyas de pasar, the jewels she left in her will to pass from queen to queen.

A two-for-one tiara: yes or no?

Royal Outfits of the Day: The Spanish Royal Family in Asturias

Last week the Spanish royal family visited Asturias to mark the 13th centenary of the Kingdom of Asturias, the centenary of the Catholic Coronation of the Virgin of Covadonga, and the centenary of the creation of the National Park of Covadonga Mountain. Phew! That's a lot of centenaries all at once.

House of HM the King
It was an historic day for one more reason, too: this marked the first official trip to Asturias for the Princess of Asturias, a big step in Leonor's official life. She was supported by her parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, and her sister, Infanta Sofia. Leonor's blue outfit went with her dad's tie; Sofia's pink with red accents went with her mom's red dress. Family coordination: check.

Embed from Getty Images
And it's all very appropriate and very good, precisely as we have come to expect from them! Letizia's red dress is custom Carolina Herrera. She can never go too wrong in her best color.

Embed from Getty Images
Leonor's light blue dress was a great background for some of the official gifts she received on her big trip. Leonor and Sofia received necklaces with medallions of the Virgin of Covadonga, which they both put on (Leonor's wearing hers above). Both girls received chain necklaces from Asturias with Asturian gold and sapphires (see here). As Princess of Asturias, Leonor received a beautiful bejeweled handmade badge, which you can read about and see here. She wore that during the day as well.

House of HM the King
They rounded things out with some hiking for that aforementioned national park centenary. If this picture's not a tourism advertisement for that park, I don't know what is. What a view! And what a well played day for the whole family.

Royal Style Twins of the Day: Meghan and Letizia's Tuxedo Dresses

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended a gala performance of Hamilton in London last night, benefiting Sentebale.
Embed from Getty Images
The Sussexes returned to the scene with a rare royal engagement that I would actually volunteer for: a special Hamilton performance! (Harry even got the crowd going by singing a bit of King George III's part in his speech after the show.)

Judith & Charles Digital dress
It was a tuxedo dress from Canadian label Judith & Charles for Meghan. That's a classic choice but an overall look that was missing some sort of finishing touch for me. (Don't ask me what finishing touch, I'm not a helpful person. Just...something? Yeah. That's clear.)

Never fear, though, we have another royal stab at the tuxedo dress just waiting in the archives for this comparison opportunity:

Embed from Getty Images
Back in 2013, still in her Princess of Asturias days, Queen Letizia donned a dress much the same, which is no surprise at all since a tuxedo dress is an idea that's been done a million times. Letizia added some earring and shoe shine - maybe that's the elusive finishing touch - to pick up the shinier lapel of her Felipe Varela version.

What's interesting to me is that both designers used a similar length. I suppose Meghan's look will cause a bit of pearl-clutching for finishing above the knee, but I have to agree with the designers: this look really does need a shorter length. I'm no big fan of these dresses to start with because they give me late 80s/early 90s flashbacks (and, yes, Diana comparisons), so the shortness is key to keeping it fresh.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Letizia Goes Orange in Mallorca

The official engagements for the Spanish royals during their summer residence in Palma de Mallorca continued with a hefty dose of orange last week.

King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and Queen Sofia hosted a reception for the Balearic Islands.
Embed from Getty Images
Yeah, that's one orange shirt. Kinda taking over the whole outfit. Picking a color from the Carolina Herrera skirt to use for the top was the obvious way to go, although I think this Hugo Boss top wasn't the right choice in color or in shape.

House of HM the King
Not that I don't sympathize, you know, because as glorious as a full skirt can be, figuring out what to pair it with can be the trickiest decision.

The King and Queen hosted the Prime Minister of Spain and his wife for lunch at Marivent Palace.
House of HM the King
Letizia also dipped into the coral side of her floral theme with a new dress from Adolfo Domínguez. Lacking the Letizia sass, I think, but serviceable all the same.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Letizia Eases Into Summer Casual

The Spanish royals have settled in for their annual summer residency in Palma de Mallorca. But before Queen Letizia got there, she took a baby step that (sartorial) direction...

Queen Letizia opened the International Music School Summer Courses by the Princess of Asturias Foundation in Oviedo, her hometown, last week.
House of HM the King
A denim shirt dress is exactly the way to inch yourself towards those more casual summer holidays. A couple of her royal colleagues have certainly agreed in the past couple weeks, at least!

The Spanish royal family held their annual photocall after arriving in Palma de Mallorca, this year at the Royal Palace of La Almudaina.
Embed from Getty Images
Maybe she's still easing into her summer casual mode, because this dress is a little more formal than what Letizia's worn for the past few years of these photo sessions. (A lot of capris and sleeveless tops, basically.) She also wouldn't have much trouble finding royal colleagues to share her affection for the eyelet look either. And it's another winner, I'm gonna say.

Royal Dresses of the Day: Letizia and Eugenie's Double Bests

I hereby declare the best dress of the week to be a tie between these two repeats, both summery and swishy and all that good stuff. Let's send ourselves off to the weekend with a pair of bests:

King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited Bailen.
Embed from Getty Images
See? SWISHY. This dress is so ready to twirl, it'll do it on its own if Letizia's not feeling game. These divine polka dots are from Carolina Herrera, and we first saw the dress during a solo trip a couple months ago.

Embed from Getty Images
We can't have an ode to perfect summer dresses without a little bit of #TeamShades, now can we? Of course we can't. Living her best shampoo commercial life, as always.

Princess Eugenie attended Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday celebrations in London.
Princess Eugenie also wowed in a repeat, the great green dress by Osman she debuted at Trooping the Colour last month. I loved it from the waist up during that event and it does not disappoint in full length. I am particularly swooning over the color. Keep building that good dress momentum right up to the big wedding day, Eugenie.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Letizia, at Last

I know, I know, we haven't seen much of Queen Letizia around here lately. Even though her trip with King Felipe to the United States was a while back (they visited Louisiana, Texas, and Washington, D.C.), I'm still going to show you my two fave outfits. And then we'll do a couple with a slightly more current date.

House of HM the King
As it happens, my two favorite outfits from the US trip both happened in San Antonio. Letizia got twirly for a formal dinner with this fresh and fun Carolina Herrera dress with a tiered skirt - and it didn't hurt that she threw in some of the joyas de pasar for good measure. She wore the earrings and one of the bracelets (on the arm you can't see in this picture).

House of HM the King
Also, you KNOW I'm here for the polka dot dresses! Adding a red clutch upped the fun factor in a most pleasing way. This dress comes from Matilde Cano, another new Spanish designer for the Queen.

Embed from Getty Images
Fast forward to our current month and the Spains are back home, meetin' and greetin' like crazy with a series of audiences. This one was last week and this one is the best appearance of these Hugo Boss pants yet. Like I said when she wore them at Easter, you can never really go wrong with a yacht-ready ensemble - and there's nothing like a sleeveless top to inch you closer to your yachting goals.

House of HM the King
This happened yesterday. Maybe I shouldn't send us off for the weekend on such a sad note, but too late. It's dishwater and droopy and the frayed edges add to the impression that this dress just GAVE UP HOPE.

Adolfo Dominguez dress
I think it needs to be worn to a beach party or something. I dunno. You're gonna have to take this one to a happy place, it's not bringing the happy to you.

Royal Outfits of the Day: Queen Letizia's Recents

It's been a minute, let's hit some selected highlights from Letizia's recent shenanigans:

Queen Letizia attended the inauguration of the 13th International Seminar of Language and Journalism yesterday.
House of HM the King
I saw the top half of this first and thought it seemed awfully tame for her. Lacking the Letizia touch, if you will. Until, of course, I saw the whole thing, and there it is. It works.

The Spanish royals attended Armed Forces Day on Saturday.
Embed from Getty Images
This coat gives me a toothache, it's so sweet. Too sweet for her. Except I think she could get around that if she shook up the styling a bit; so far, we've seen this Carolina Herrera coat twice and both times she's worn it like this, like a dress with these pink heels. I'd nix the pink shoes, for a starter.

Queen Letizia visited the Dominican Republic and Haiti last week.
House of HM the King
This is my second favorite outfit from this trip. This is where those pink heels shine.

House of HM the King
And finally, my fave from the trip - and, really, my fave from all of her recent offerings - is a great polka dot dress. You can never go wrong with a great polka dot dress. From Carolina Herrera, natch. Extra points awarded for twirl-ability.

Breaking Tiara News of the Day: Queen Letizia Wears the Cartier Diamond and Pearl Tiara

It's always headline news around here when Queen Letizia decides to dig something new out of the vaults.

The King and Queen of Spain hosted a state dinner for the President of Portugal during his state visit to Spain today.
House of HM the King
This is her first time wearing the Cartier Diamond and Pearl Tiara, which belonged to Queen Victoria Eugenia and went to Infanta Maria Cristina before making a return to the main line and being worn by Queen Sofia and (on one occasion) Infanta Cristina. (Check out the tiara's full story here.) This is my favorite of the larger Spanish tiaras and it looks perfect on Letizia, tipped back just a bit.

Embed from Getty Images
She paired it with the diamond earrings from the joyas de pasar and, of course, the sash and star of Portugal's Order of Christ.

House of HM the King
Just as she continues to experiment with jewels, Letizia continues to experiment with new designers, wearing a dress here by Ana Locking. This dress is a full-on Monet: a gorgeous star-filled evening sky from afar but a hail storm so harsh it'll rip your sleeves when viewed close up. But it definitely calls for a pearl tiara and this one's a winner, so I can only be all on board.
